Dedicated servers: Does for Honor need them for Long term success?
I haven't seen much discussion from the community about the lack of dedicated servers in the game (surprisingly). I firmly believe that peer to peer connection will absolutely harm the game's longevity, especially in the flagship 4v4 mode, where not only are disconnects and host benefits rife (based on the alpha, which is not fully representative of the final product, of course) but full instances of games being completely dropped because of a bad host were commonplace. I think that, long term, the game will live or die depending on the game's connectivity, considering the fact that most of the depth of the combat comes from quick decision making as is the case with feints, quick, interrupting attacks, guard breaks and counter guard breaks. as well parries, all requiring crucial timing, something which latency issues and connection inconsistencies will only hamper.
I implore you, Ubisoft, before release, look to the likes of CS:GO, Overwatch, DOTA and LoL, some of the biggest competitive PvP games out there. They ARE eSports right now, they ARE the benchmark for competitive play, and they ALL share the fact that they HAVE dedicated servers.
To compare, the likes of Destiny and RainbowSix Seige are recently popular games WITHOUT dedicated servers, and while I understand that correlation does not always imply causation, these games are highly regarded competitive games with a relatively low interest in the eSports scene, I believe due to their known LAG issues.
I think For Honor has a very special niche as an awesome, hardcore, melee, highly competitive game. I would be so discouraged to see it die early after release due to lack of support, Like so many good games have (Titanfall for instance; really cool ideas/mechanics, ruined by unstable connections and lack of support!) it would be really reassuring to see some communication whether the game will, in fact, run on local, dedicated servers or not, and whether the devs are dedicated to supporting this awesome game in the long term, to ensure it does not become a flash of brilliance that dies out before its time, but rather a strong staple in the competitive scene.
Anyway, if you have an opinion, share it below! I'd love to see this topic be broached in a constructive way for a game I am so darned excited for!
