So what did everyone think? And what would you change?
I thought it was pretty good. I would make a few changes, such as damage when falling from a ladder. I can take several heavy blows from a greataxe, but my I die when I fall 5ft or more... also health regen out of combat would be a nice addition.
Another change I would like to see, friendly strikes during combat. Not so much the damage, just the stuns and knocking off balance. Can't count how many times I was tearing into someone, and then, out of left field, comes a friendly player swinging whatever his weapon, knocking me around as the enemy keeps blocking his hits, then we both end up dying with me having my health depleted and the friendly out of stamina. Or knocking me into a pitfall on the Overwatch map. So that needs some tweaking in my opinion.
I have read many players thought the orochi was overpowered. I disagree, since the orochi is specialized in counters. I had no problem with them, once i figured out that blocking and quickstriking was an easy way to take them out. Some classes are better than others. For me, I switched mainly between the the kensei, orochi, warden and conquerer. My favorite overall being the kensei. I tried the orochi and loved, but i was better with kensei, reaching lvl 14 or 15 by the end of the alpha
I loved the blocking system, and the levelling up of rank in each match to unlock your abilities every match, rather than having them at start. Another positive was the weapon/armor enhancing, and wide array of customization options. From colors, symbols, and looks of your armor, to the look of the guard on your sword, you can change it all.
A mode I would love to see would be somthing like a rush mode. Where you have to push the other side back to win.
Overall, pretty darn good. Look forward to seeing more in the beta!
Personally, my main gripe with the game is the Dominion mode. 1v1 and 2v2 modes feel fantastic, but in Dominion, the combat kinda turns "meh" and you are constantly running around like a headless chicken. The maps are too small, points are captured too fast and it all just doesn't feel very satisfying overall.
Might just be me, I might've not given the Domination mode enough time to shine or perhaps I was just playing in/against relatively crappy teams. But the game mode was just very disappointing, especially considering it feels like it's supposed to be the game's "main" mode. I'd like to see slower captures, less insane point fluctuation and some actual payoff from holding a point. Slightly larger maps would be nice too, all 3 points are right next to each other and it just doesn't feel like much of a battlefield. Perhaps a bigger map with 5 control points instead of 3 would be more interesting.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. Combat is fantastic and incredibly deep, all the classes feel very unique (hoping there's more coming though), the customization is beyond awesome and even the netcode seems relatively decent, at least for an alpha point in the game (it does need a little work for release, but it's almost perfect). My only fear is that without a proper, good main mode, the game would get tiresome in just the duels after a while, so I'm hoping we start seeing something more epic in Dominion.
Hi there,
Before i start, i just want to say Thank you for the invitation (even if i get it at 17:40 pm on friday, hopefully i was checking my mails at 18pm) & thanks too for the 3 friends invite) I have preordered the game 1 week ago so thank you so much.
Well, it was the game i expected, most everything was perfect. Here are a + & - of my own opinion.
+ (Like) :
- Classes was balanced, as long as you play (or watch videos "how to play") each classes to know weak points and strong points.
- Unblockable attacks are always or mostly paryable or dodgeable ( You can parry the raiders one with the good timing as well as all attacks)
- AI is pretty smart & hard, pretty good to learn before going pvp
- Leveling isn't too slow or too fast, like it.(My main : Warden Renown 1 lvl 17-18)
- As for coins, getting some doesn't take much time with the challenges.
- Customisation is great, more will be nice, but for a closed beta, 2-3-4 for each part of the character stuff is pretty good
- Playing with friends works fine, invite & joining
+ - (Like & Dislike):
- Basic (grey) stuff is maximum lvl 6, i've only drop 1 blue stuff lvl 7 with a 700 coins gear scavenging (and i suppose that one is max lvl 12 or 13) This mean you need to level up hard to get high stuff, that's nice idea, but i don't know, maybe i was expecting more. As the blue stuff give a huge bonus on a stat & malus on other one.
- Execution are awesome, but didn't see any of the 2 other buyable of each classes played (maybe 1000 coins is a bit expensive for a closed beta)
- Changing lock system is nice, but i don't feel confortable with it, sometimes my finger just release a bit and make me change target and sometime not. (playing on a XBox 360 controler).
- Loading times are good but i was expecting a bit faster. As i'm playing on a high spec computer, don't know if it comes from it or from the connection or even the server (as my connection is not as good as my computer) but hey, that's a closed beta so, I'm not holding it.
- The VOIP looks nice, but as i'm not at ease to speak english, don't have the time to speak (writing) with other people ingame & can't while loading, can only before launching.
- Maps are great, we just need more.
- I've seen that people wants bigger maps, that's not my opinion, or at least, with more players. I think maps are balanced & large enough for 4v4, traveling from the start to the fight takes time so, wider maps on 4v4 is not a good idea imo.
- (Dislike) :
- Can't absolutly hold 2 or more opponent at time as the AI does (even with revenge), we need a tutorial on how to stand before help come and maybe how to strike back
- The AI berserker make me sad 2 times in a game (Brawl) as he chain attack me with almost no cost of stamina, at high speed on all direction, can't hold it more than few seconds, can't dodge, parry or whatever, just a crazy slashing fury, it just happen 2 times, so maybe something gone wrong in the pattern code.
- The game need more fairplay as i really don't like being smashed by 4 angry players. You need to make something about this. Maybe a really lower bonus to the players or even a malus as there is no honor to go 4v1 or 3v1.
- I'll tell it but you already know your servers has many trouble during the closed beta, you need to focus on that, that's the priority, as you have already done during the week-end (was almost stable at the end). I won't accept any server trouble on the final release 1.0. Nothing is more annoying than losing server connection when you manage to have a 10-0 KD ratio. Hope you've learned a lot on what to do to make server gone right.
I think that is all for me.
Anyway, it's a great game you've made. Hope it will continue this way. You're making an awesome job.
I can't wait for the solo campaign, and maybe with DLC(or not) had a coop campaign.
Just to end this, i'm french so i think everything is clear but if they are any question or if you need more details or whatever, just tell me ^^
Hope we will get the next alpha/beta soon to enjoy more, with more stuff, coins (steel), all classes, more customisations and keep our lvl & stuff, emots, usable renown points, ect... and please don't ruin it with pay to win stuff.
A good game need quality & quantity.
Thank again for invitation, hope i'll see you on the battlefield (didn't see any Ubi staff ingame).
DamVador.
Really good impression of the alpha overall, I played about 5 hours over the weekend (so probably nowhere near as much as some!), and didn't feel out of my depth apart from in one or two brawls (I finished with about a 60% win ratio). I generally played as part of a 2 with a friend of mine, and I really think that in the main game having a story mode will help any strugglers to learn the controls before delving into PvP.
Positives:
- Great feel to the combat in general - not a case of button-bashing like in so many hack and slash games. Many times I found myself fighting someone who was constantly mashing "heavy attack" and i simply sidestepped and gradually cut away at their health. That said, I did find that any more than 2v1 was impossible to handle - but i guess it would be that way in real life too.
- Really enjoyed the brawl and duel game modes - this game really feels like it is built for that 1v1 combat. I particularly enjoyed fighting a strong opponent in the first couple of rounds, and seeing the respect grow. By the third or fourth rounds there would often be a period of waiting before the combat began as we each worked out how to strike - very satisfying to win one of those!
- Lots of variety in the characters - they all felt like they were really different and required different skills to master. I particularly enjoyed the Kensei, who felt very well balanced, but also enjoyed the warden. I can see myself levelling up a variety of different characters when the main game is released.
- Customisation options all good - I'm not one for needing lots of them but enjoyed what was on offer.
- Practice mode was good and clear, got me started really well without taking up too much time.
Negatives (points for improvement)
- No way to duel 1v1 with a friend? I wanted to help one of my friends improve by fighting him 1v1 and showing him the techniques I used, but it wasn't possible. I'd like to see an option for doing this in an "unranked" way in the main game, to prevent people abusing it for power-levelling, but it should definitely be in there in some form.
- Dominion mode felt a little frantic at times. I'm not sure that the balance is quite right. Maybe the maps are too small, or maybe the points system is wrong, but either way the games seemed to be over very quickly. I found i either went 10-0 and we won by miles, or i got constantly swamped, went 1-10 and we got destroyed. It was very rarely close.
- Orochi felt a little OP compared to the rest of the characters. I did gradually get used to fighting them, and I didn't feel this point as strongly by the end as I did at the start, but I do still feel that they seemed to have too many advantages, particularly in brawl/duel where it is harder to gang up on them. Often they would wait for me to make the first move, and as soon as I swung they were past me and the fight seemed to be over in a flash.
- Some server issues, particularly with dominion modes - booted from server on more than one occasion, and once for inactivity even though i was dead and watching my partner fight on! I expect these to some extent in an Alpha though but as DamVador said, it needs to be fixed for the final game.
Overall, congratulations on coming up with something innovative in an age where games seem to go on a repeat format of "COD, Battlefield, Fifa". Great to see you trying something different and I think you have the makings of a classic here. A lot will depend on how good the story mode is for me, but I really enjoyed experiencing the PvP in the Alpha.
Thanks
Positives :
- Art of battle system is amazing, love the rock paper scissors mechanic.
- Game looks great and play smooth as butter.
- The fact you can co-op everything on release, and splitscreen!
- No ranged combat
- Combat was much deeper than I first thought.
- Executions are satisfying.
Negatives :
- No dedicated servers.
- Joining was sometimes hard to do, even on the same network.
- Unblockables are being spammed.
- Combos sometimes feel like cheap shots.
Can't wait to see what's changed in the beta and full release,
I rarely pre-order anything but this game is something else.
Been waiting for something like this for a long time, and I can say you guys delivered on it.
Great job Ubisoft!
