Spent a good 4 hours on the Alpha today, i'll be leaving out the class talk and all that as I'm no where good enough to comment on it. General thoughts is, the game is phenomenal and is headed in the right direction. A few times I'll be referencing other multiplayer games, because I feel they do things RIGHT in some regards, and it's worth studying (if not out right stealing) their ideas.
-Extra additions that'd be nice would be; expanded maps, progressive maps (Fight and break the gate, move in and fight on the walls, then assault the keep: Chivalry Medieval Warfare style). Maybe even a mini-campaign style Faction War where you choose a Faction and fight for control of an overworld map. Like Red Orchestra games have in their multiplayer for example. Thought I imagine that would have a lot of problems in regards to match making, dedicated servers maybe?
-Have small quick matches for people who only have 10 or so minutes to spare, then have deeper more robust modes for neck beards who want to sink in and play for hours.
In the final game I definitely hope there's a proper match making system, based on skill level. It really feels like the wild west right now.
-When you get a balanced match, this game is amazing. The few times I've had those, rated 5 stars. Everyone feels it too, most people stay and play a few more sessions before the group begins to break apart.
-Then you usually get about 2-3 curb stomps in between good matches. One team is 200-300, the other team wins with 1500. I always rate those matches 1 star, because those types of matches aren't fun for anyone.
-A few matches went back and forth, but one team ultimately pulls out ahead by a good margin, those got 3 stars. Very rarely did I bestow a 2 or a 4.
My main complaint is...
Of those 4 hours I logged, according to my profile, I only spent 2 and a half hours actually playing the game. That's a *BIG* problem, especially considering I barely touched the customization. Most of it was spent waiting for a match, waiting in between matches, waiting for it load, waiting for more players to join the current matches, or waiting for people to pick their class and ready up. So much WAITING in this game, made worse by the fact that you can't do anything.
-Touching on that, from minor optimizations, like making the "READY" command more pronounced, would do a lot of good.
-The fact that you have to HOLD X to enter match making instead of just pressing it is ridiculous. It seems minor, but the most important thing for a multiplayer game is how quick and easy it is to enter a match. In that pursuit, I promise you, it's the small things that matter the most.
-Copy Overwatch. Do it. Overwatch has one of the most seamless and painless match making systems I've ever seen. While waiting, you can do ANYTHING. Change options, look at characters, read fluff lore, customize your stuff. In For Honor, I can tap my buttons in boredom while I wait 2-5 minutes depending on if I'm between matches, waiting on someone to lock in a character, or waiting in queue. It's dumb, to say the least.
