Why not just give out more gold? I want to customize everyone but I ran out of gold.

They give you 1500 steel for completing the tutorial which is enough to unlock all the heroes.

Part of this specific alpha test is to test out progression. Giving out steel would make any data useless.

Not to mention the 450 for completing the weekly orders, and then 500 for both of the daily orders, and the 500 for the daily orders from yesterday. 2950 Steel total (excluding any earned from games) so far.

To clarify... I completely understand a disappointment in not being able to effectively earn steel if you dedicate your time to the game over someone who just logs on once a day for 20 minutes but you are given enough steel to play as all characters and even if you wasted it, you can earn plenty more to buy the characters. You just have to stay off that Scavenging pit.
