Im going to just say it plainly: I don't come to this mode to have way too many really good fights devolve into a spammy cheesefest of who can throw who off the ledge or into the fire to tilt them first because of the arena. it cheapens the dueling experience immensely while adding nothing but mild spectacle that turns into worry and annoyance soon after.
And to make things worse, in many arenas, there's no simple way to just bring the fight to a more regular space, and even when there is, it's either poorly-shaped and annoying to battle on or in a place where an aggressive enemy could easily intercept you. That's not to say that running is a proper solution anyway. It creates too much confusion without chat. In the first place, I think if you want to use environmental factors against someone, it's something you should have to lead them to, not something someone has to convince you to leave behind.
I get that a big theme of this game is the battle, not just the swordplay, and really I'm fine with environmental elements in 2v2s and obviously in dominion, but it's nothing more than obnoxious in 1v1s to me. If I want battle, i go elsewhere. At least I'd like the option to focus on swordplay, uninhibited, for once.
As for solutions, maybe it'd be best to have two maps with environmental factors and two without, and have people vote for them as they do maps now. I feel a separate mode would only fragment players trying to 1v1, but this mode really is obnoxious with only the brief reprieve of one of the few standard-ish arenas inbetween the constant bickering over ledges.
As a side note, I wasn't quite sure if this should go in Modes or Maps. I'll move it if this ends up not being the right place.
I don't mind it, but it doesn't feel like true dueling when the Raider opens up with a charge and just runs you off a ledge, winning the duel instantly. They need some maps that are plain open areas with nothing in between, or at most pillars or other physical blockage, not insta-kill stuff or fire.
There is a world of difference between having to be aware of your environment and having the entire fight be completely, and necessarily themed after trying to not get ****ed over by it. I'm not playing this mode to fight the maps, I'm playing it to fight people. Realism can get in the way just as much as it can help things, and let's not pretend there aren't plenty of ways to just not have these elements that'd be just as realistic.Originally Posted by xDarkMACx Go to original post
As I said, I don't see any problem with it in any other mode presented so far, but I can't see its place in actual dueling. It only gets in the way of the actual duel.
Yeah. For Raiders, playing for stuns and blinds is already super powerful, especially considering the combos they can get off with it. The fact that this same play can result in instakills every other round baffles me. Though I'd note that I find a good zerker with good parries to be just as, if not much more terrifying around ledges.Originally Posted by Pallbearer7 Go to original post
And yeah, I'm all for more interesting layouts that don't revolve around pitfalls/spikes, fire, or putting you in a narrow fighting area. And of course, I'm for the areas with more traditional arena shapes/layouts, too.
I had the same experience. Environmental factors should play a role in the game, but it happens way to often that you get pushed down into death. These duels 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 should only be decided by the weapons(Sword, axe and so on). There should be an arena or map where only you weapon plays a role. Or maybe you can push down an opponent but only after a certan number of hits. Basically you have to earn that option.
I like the environmental deaths as they add more risk to melee of 4v4 combat. However, I can't count the number of times I've fought a Raider or a Conqueror in a 1v1 duel and all they've done is stand next to the holes on the bridges or the cliff side, refusing to go towards you and only spamming guard break (or Raider rushing tackle). It removes any skill from the duels which should be fought on a level playing field. As a Warden and Conqueror, I've dueled plenty and won many honorable fights but players who just try to cheese kill you over and over ruin the experience.Originally Posted by xDarkMACx Go to original post
For the record I'm glad guard breaks and throws are in the game SO before you tell me to *ahem* 'git gud', I should tell you that I have adapted to these cheese tactics and played more cautiously against these players, countering guard breaks etc. This post isn't so much me moaning about it, but rather raising awareness of this so players won't be put off from dueling altogether.
i think its fine... every map has a random grouping of dueling spots. and every grouping has a pretty good mix of open enviornment versus tight space. adding more open space dueling would still leave it to chance whether you got those spots in a duel... and forgoing ledges, cliffs etc punishes classes, players that use those spaces. take away the ledges and some of those abilities go way down in value.
...this is not mortal kombat, injustice, street fighter...
In 4v4 the environment is awesome. There is a continuous action and you have to pay attention to all the areas in the game. If you quickly want to change the game in you favor, throwing someone off a nearby cliff is a great tool. Being the defender of the area you have to be aware of your enemy and the environment which gives an additional dimension to the whole dominion mode.
Concerning the 2v2 and 1v1 modes it is more of a 2 sided thingy. First, these modes are about who is the best warrior. A warrior also has to be aware of his surroundings while watching the actions of his opponent. The winner is the better warrior in the combination of these two things. Second, when you lose by getting thrown off a cllif or in a pit with wooden spikes, it is a big bummer and it is very frustrating, because it is not really fair. You made a mistake or you opponent was just a step ahead of you.
In the end it just comes down to being aware of you surroundings and you opponent at the same time.
And yes the title of the game says "For Honor" and winning by pushing your opponent off a cliff is not fair, but a fight isn't always fair.
