Been playing on PC for a few hours and I got to say I am really enjoying the game overall. Connection issues aside, here are some of my impressions so far, good and bad, of For Honor:
The Good:
- 1v1 duels can be slow, methodical, tense and downright fun. I can see this mode being the crown jewel of this game.
- For the most part each faction is balanced well, but there are definitely some tweaks that need to be made to both Samurai and Viking. Right now it seems like Knights have the disadvantage against both of them
- Performance wise the game is solid for an alpha build, hopefully it holds up when retail comes around
- Every fighter has a unique style that doesn't feel completely useless, and each class can defeat any other class with the right amount of patience and skill
The Bad:
- Any mode other than Dual is an utter **** show of button mashing and gang bangs. Not that this is a bad thing, but these modes are definitely going to be where the lesser skilled players will congregate to. Dominion will definitely be the place for trolls
- Looking at this game strictly from a "fighter" standpoint, there is not enough punishment on button mashers even in 1v1 (although the issue isn't nearly as bad as larger game modes). Slamming light attack over and over should punish way more (locked animations, frames, fatigue, whatever)
- Weaker connection seems to win the fight. This may just be me, but it feels like players on slower connections get an advantage.
Overall the game so far has met my expectations, but I do hope they either slow the players down a bit, or add more punishment for missed attacks/button mashing. Right now its pretty easy to quickly recover/block after missing a swing.
I would have to disagree on your so called "**** show" I take 2D and 3D fighting games very seriously and I have to admit the 4v4 balances things just right. the time it takes to cap points, wave pushes, health, and just overall map design there is plenty of room for skilled players to do things properly (in this case fight) you can not call a situation where your teammates are not there to help out a "gang bang"... just relax and get more familiar with all your tools. Some of the mechanics implemented into the game will take people a while to get used to.
Overall the game mode is good, but when 4 people focus one guy down with stun locks/throws, it becomes a **** show. Ive been on both the giving and receiving end of these, and i don't exactly expect a 1v4 to come out on top, but the tactis now are just "group together, pummel one guy with stunlocks, move to next". Nothing wrong with it, but its cheese to the max and it'll get old quick, which is why i primarily stick to Duel and Brawl.
I think that's why map awareness is really important. Whenever I'm fighting someone, I'm constantly glancing down at the minimap to see if any of their friends are coming and how many allies I have in close proximity to me as well. Sometimes you just have to retreat for a short time if multiple people are trying to kill you. Then again, I know sometimes it's a bit unavoidable but I think it can be managed pretty well.Originally Posted by iDamaskus Go to original post
