It's really hard for me to tell what I should do with the end of round rewards. I can't tell if they are better or worse than the gear I have. Is it at all possible to put a green + or a red -
next to what reward you get in order to tell if it's better than what I have equipped, or possibly highlight it with a green or red border?

You can go to customize menu and compare for yourself. But you cannot do that whilst in between matches, you have to be in the customize menu

Which brings up an issue I feel. I'd like to upgrade gear in between matches. I can't see a single reason why that's not possible, considering the amount of downtime between them.

Simply put the cursor over the item and it gives you the red/green bars to show the difference. If there is no red or green then it is exactly the same as the one you have equipped.

If you want to equip it you can from the same screen, but you cannot change back unless you leave the match and go into customization (same for upgrading).
