Interrupt able Executions are the way to go IMO.
You are most likely in the majority. A lot of people hate backstabs and ripostes, especially in dark souls 1.

Souls PvP is the most infuriating thing I've experienced as a gamer. Everything feels floaty, and the only 'strategy' that seems to exist is roll>roll>swing>roll>roll>swing>roll>backstab for 40 billion damage.

It's even worse when you're in the first or second zone and get invaded by someone with crazy-level gear, so if you get breathed on you die immediately, without all the dodge-spam and backstabs.

If/When I do play them, I tend to turn the internet off.

I think that is simplifying the game more than it deserves, but it is not a game with good balancing, nor is it always focused on your pvp matches being "fair" neither for the invader or the host. I find that the best pvp comes from duelling, where it does have a level of strategy, spacing and timing to it. Also makes parrying and backstabbing way less useful. The thing about this though, is that it is usually only the dedicated fans that actually duel.

    Probably.

I think I view it in such simplistic terms because I've never had a single fight with another player that felt good in any way. Maybe I wasn't playing against someone who had any strategy other than the one I described. Maybe I just got unlucky. Maybe I don't have the patience to learn the nuances. Maybe it's just one of those things that's 'not for me'.

Whatever the case, I've never liked the PvP, and find the whole invasion mechanic to be annoying.
