Have you really given most gear sets a fair shake?

I get the feeling that many people in here are heavily influenced by the opinions of this forum...and that many people really take things said here verbatim without ever exploring the reality of things for themselves. This game is in constant search of the "meta," I feel. People are always trying to look for that setup where the build does the heavy lifting rather than requiring conscious thought and implementation in order to prevail in a given situation.

Sentry obviously comes to mind. You don't have to do anything different than you typically do. You just get huge bonuses for doing it. Other sets require you to play differently in order to realize the bonuses. Some require you to use specific equipment or weapons.

One of my favorite examples is FireCrest. Everyone ***** upon FireCrest. I love it. While I think the 2 piece bonus is absolute garbage, just because there's no set way to acquire additional incendiary rounds...the 3 and 4 piece bonuses are awesome. The quick reload time is fantastic, and I enjoy it even more than Lone Star's 4 piece bonus....mostly because it requires one less piece and doesn't require swapping weapons to achieve. But the 4 piece bonus is indeed a riot, and it's easier to activate than people think.

Obviously in order to be granted your bonus incendiary rounds, you have to kill an opponent that's already on fire, and you only get to carry so many incendiary rounds. Well, there's more than one way to flambe a marshmallow. Carry both an airburst seeker mine, and a flame turret. Both will light up opponents, and immobilize them...which makes them a bunch of sitting ducks to be put down. And once you have...boom. Incendiary rounds. Now...since the frequency with which you get incendiary rounds is wholly dependent on your ability to down burning foes, it behooves you to be in position to burn as many people as possible. In addition to running this set with a teammate using Reclaimer, it's also a set that works well when run with packs of people running the same build. If you've never played with a group of 4 people, with one running Reclaimer, and 3 running FireCrest with the airburst seeker/flame turret combo...then you're really missing out. You damned near feel like a cleaner. Further, if you can manage to put together an FC build with a high degree of skill power and skill haste, the frequency with with your turret and mine will be available will put you in position to be burning **** up on a near constant basis.

LoneStar is another often shat upon set. I know it sucks getting nothing but LS gear from the HRT's, but hey, you need at least two pieces on each character for the ammo bonus, right? lol Aside from that, LoneStar can be an amazing experience. It focusses on two weapon types that cover both short and long term engagements, and alleviates an issue that both gun types have...long reloads. Further, it gives damage increases to both SG's and LMG's. Coupled with a fine pair of savage gloves that add crit hit chance to targets out of cover (LMG's already have a native damage bonus to targets out of cover), and you have the making of a very very good DPS build. Throw in some skill power for some great smart cover, and the LMG portion of the equation can be quite a monster.

Don't sleep on the unconventional sets. There's more to them than often appears on the surface. They're fun to use, perfectly viable in PvE, and can even be used effectively in PvP if you're aware of your strengths and shortcomings...especially as they relate to whatever the meta of the day is.

the reason everyone ****s on them its not cause they are absolutely bad, but cause others are much better. If youre just levelling up and looking for a viable set, you can use them, but having all the sets and choosing that is either for pure fun (if you can have that fun at all), or insanity. If you wanna be max effective, you don't use that.

I don't know what's going on, but I agree with your posts today ...

Personally, I've tried Predators, Sentry, AB (favourite), Tactician and Firecrest extensively. And right now I'm building a crazy 3pc Firecrest + 3 Pc Lonestar set to try out something different, just because. What am I missing in this build? A double barrel shotgun with Provident and Intense (and brutal would be nice too).

    Double. Barrel.

Might not work, but if it does this build could be a LOT of fun both in PVE and PVP.

Can't give anything a "fair" shake when your wearing 1 of every set because you get jacksh__ for drops!

Until the RNG is fixed, 182 crafted HE and random POS pieces is what I got...

Hello, have you tried sentry, striker or tactician. Give them a try and you will trow away the rest. Devs tried to make others to use those new sets by changing sentry and striker (5 pieces for full bonus) and it didn`t worked. 3rd change to sentry is coming but i will still use it even after that.

Hope they will fix the strikers loosing the buff while hitting a engineer turret or changing weapons but even know its still rock solid set.

    I got 4 chars

    sentry
    tac
    striker
alpha (get whole set without going into DZ - did hero Falcon lost with it, quite solid gear i would say)

I've tried them all. I used Sentry, Striker, and Tacticians less than any of the other above linked sets that I've put together. They're boring, mundane, and everyone else uses them already. I enjoy being able to put together proficient sets of gear without having to use whatever the crutch of the day meta is. I don't need OP, and I don't need something that's head and shoulders above the rest. What I'm looking for is fun, engaging, and unique.

The game itself is very cookie cutter. We rinse and repeat the same missions and game modes over and over again. The only way to make things fun is to vary the manner in which you approach the game, and using different gear sets achieves this for me. If I got stuck using the 4 sets you named, like everyone else, I think I'd just quit playing.

short answer is, yes I have.

However, I still use Tactician, sentry set more, not because I dont want to give other sets a chance, but there's a common norm on the player community percieved notion of which set(s) are best at doing certain game modes. While I'd love to rock out with 3 FC + 3 LS set and fill a DPS spot for a DN 4 horsemen heroic farming group, it's just not the best option, nor will random pug group leader let me stay in the group. Interestingly, I did get kicked few times because Tactician set is not as "good" as Reclaimer set, nothing I can do about that. In DZ, I guess everything goes, as long as you are having "fun" in it (I dont). Currently I am using a well optimized AB + Vigorous chest + Savage gloves to do UG challenge / heroic, hasnt got kicked yet, but I am having fun with it. I guess my point is, if you have a +3 friends to play with, you can be kind of creative with what set you use, if you are solo and random pug all the time, you really dont have the option.

Yes. All of them. My faves are.

    Tac
    Sentry with vig chest
    Reclaimer for the fun factor
Nomad for resource material collecting and generally praying about solo in the LZ.

Striker is annoying with exp bullets
Firecrest is pointless because of reclaimer
Can't remember the others because they are insignificant.

    Yep.

With my main I run a Sentry, Reclaimer, Dead-Eye or Tac build. I use 2pc Hunters Faith with the Dead-Eye.

With my alt I run Lone Star, Predator or Alpha Bridge.

I used Striker prior to 1.3, and use Final measure 2 pieces when circumstances call for it.

I also tried both FireCrest and BLIND and found both to be fairly useless with the exception of FC 3pc and BLIND 2pc.

    Nomad immediately gets trashed.

    What am I forgetting?

Absolutely agree. There are definitely pieces of content in this game that lend themselves to specific gear sets, and you mentioned a good one. But outside of the game's most heroic content, there's room to be successful without pigeonholing yourself into 3-4 specific gear sets.

Also...if you're random and want to run something other than what everyone else deems "appropriate," just put it on til the match starts, then switch your gear and play with whatever you want...providing there are others in the group providing a solid foundation by wearing one of the more effective sets.
