    Friendly Fire Damage

So I've been keeping up with this game since the first trailer way back when. It's probably the only game in years that I've actively looked forward to playing but I am a bit concerned about friendly fire and how it is implemented in the game. I've heard that it is in the game and after watching a few gamescom videos I can tell when a friendly player hits a teammate it does cause the player on the receiving end to stagger. What I can't tell is if it actually does any damage. With games like this my main concern is that a team will pick a roving band of fast moving, fast hitting characters to gang up on players separated from their teammates. While there are counters such a strategy it still bothers me that two or more players can corner an enemy and just spam attacks, hitting each other and the enemy player, and wind up only killing the opposition.

If at all possible I'd like the game to launch with friendly fire damage on. Not just staggering teammates. Fully damage. Half damage. Quarter damage. Anything to get players to think more about positioning and teamwork over just spamming hits.

"Friendly fire is also featured in the game. Players can CAUSE DAMAGE to their own teammates if they accidentally or intentionally hit them with their blades"

From the Wikipedia page. I forget which videos that Ubisoft mentions it in and don't have the time to go find it but it's there and hopefully that puts your worry to rest.

From what I've seen it does damage but it's a pretty small amount of damage. I think the incentive is to not hurt your team mate too much, but stagger them a bit. I think they'll keep the damage low or there would be a lot of griefing problems.

You can cause damage to your allies however the damage is nerfed so you can't go around team killing.

It happens a ton in dominion mode and if you watch any of the videos coming out of gamescom you will see how easy it is for people who are just swinging wildly to hit their allies.

The stagger can also knock teammates off platforms quite a bit if they're not careful. It happened to me sometimes.

Friendly Fire is necessary in a game like this. Especially given the huge advantage you get ganging up 2 on 1. Part of the balance of fighting against multiple opponents in reality is the fact that the more people you have, the more they get in each other's way. That's why in the past you were taught to surround the opponent, rather than both going at them from the same direction. It's also why you were taught that if you were fighting multiple opponents, the best thing to do was to funnel them into a narrow passage where they couldn't surround you, or if nothing else, at least put your back against a wall to limit from where they can attack you.

Without Friendly Fire it would make it too easy to gang up on someone. With Friendly Fire you have to be more careful so you don't kill your allies. Also, people probably won't care if they teamkill pubbies, unless you punish them harshly for it. I've played many games where the person who got teamkilled can choose to forgive or punish the person who killed them. That in itself isn't a perfect solution, since a lot of people would just choose to punish even if it was an accident, or their own fault, but having a system like that, and then if you get punished too many times you get banned for 2 days or something, with increasing lengths if you keep teamkilling would probably work.

Also, a lot of people teamkill because they get greedy and want more frags, and anyone who gets in their way is collateral damage. So removing a kill and removing points from someone who teamkills would also serve to dissuade that kind of behaviour. Ultimately you have to look at the reason why some people teamkill, and find a way for the punishment to have a direct and negative impact on what that person wants to accomplish, in order to prevent them from doing it.

Yup! I love low damage, staggering friendly fire. Adds an element of realism like stated right above. I'm sure the final version will have counters to griefers.

With all this information I am still torn. The Revenge system + staggering/low damage friendly fire won't stop 3-4 player gank squads from absolutely destroying one player. On the other hand I can see where the concern for team killers comes into play if friendly fire damage is too high. I guess it's going to be one of those things I'll have to wait and see for myself.

Agreed with you. Although I'd be fine with just stagger or lowered damage since just that can get annoying enough to make you watch your spacing.
