I knew I remembered seeing a post about this in the past.. I just started a new one since Broken Skull seemed like a slap in the face to release when so many people are experiencing problems with slow down/speed up for background animations... I play on an HTC One M9 and I distinctly remember having no issues until up til early last year... Sunset Dungeon was the first map I noticed lag on. The same phone in the same configuration with the same background apps running would run every level of TF flawlessly. It might have been a system update or a game update, but once I noticed the lag on Sunset Dungeon, other levels became laggy as well. I have no issues with any other games on my phone. I sure hope they are working on this and can resolve the problem. Turning off animations would be a nice touch, but being able to revert any settings to how things used to work would be ideal. Or maybe the phone update screwed the pooch on this one and I'll need to get a new phone -_-

I've got that same. I play on lg g4. At least make it possible to adjust game settings like fire and moving obstacles. ALso the coin flow after a checkpoint. Just like graphic settings. This game is based on skill and if the game makes it so you cant antisipate your next move it takes away the whole skill and it becomes quessing. When the game launched I played on s3 mini. Never had issues.
Hah! I feel your pain though I'm not one of you. If you need THIS to play nicely, then manage your phone and do not expect UBI will EVER optimize it for you...
Whoever read what I wrote here (re lag, stutter, performance etc..) knows why I am not going to write an essay on blah blah blah.. I'm just reminding few of you I never had any issue like yours on S2, S4, then OnePlus1 and now on OnePlus3... and I'm still gaming the same game. It's your choice of the phone and it is your setup. It's how UBI will never get it right, and fork out the optimized version of anything re&on Android. They're suck in the KitKat era and base code (they're unable to move on, aside only port something to somewhere...), and we're NOW on NOUGAT LMFAO! Pissed, but could not care less, since I always know how to manage my phone.
now without any update my game has only one issue with lagging. last week i had and last event i had in every race performance issues.
nothing happens to my phone and nothing to the app.
what i thought that they do some trackings in the background and this is our performance killer.
my theorie because "justin swan" in the video about trails frontier (4:12) is talking about tracking and analytics.
thats what our good old phones dont like, tracking and playing at the same time.
please please, give us settings to disable effects!
cheers
Villainous Hideout is pain to play with KTM450.. the swinging pole part with fire on the windows and the game drops FPS and have slowdowns and speedups unpredictably... It's just luck to pass that point without faults.

Still waiting on this option!
I've stopped receiving performance issues after moving from Nexus 7 tab (Android 5.1.1) to Samsung S7 edge (Android 6.0.1).
Actually, it was difficult two weeks to get used to a new size equipment, but it was worth, I've moved up >100 positions working on old mostly hard tracks only (to 302 for that moment), which I guess shows that I got better control on a game.
I've just received an offer to upgrade to 7.0 but postponed it. I wonder how TF runs on Nougat? Is everything OK?
jip nougat is out since december and gets many fixxes. and everything works fine except the bugs that the game has.
cheers
Heh, I'm on One+3 now (not the T version thourgh), the 6th fastest phone there is (until Shamsung pours out S8 and someone else uses that SnapD 835 coupled with fast nand)...) No lags, perfectly fluid, custom M (CM13 pure, soon to go for CM14, N version) ROM (as always) and Kernel too, driven with Tasker profiles for gaming profile auto switching, though even on battery save settings it is far better then One+1 on the max... but on On= you simply can't complain be it 1,2 ,3 or 3T!
So say we all... buy a good cheap (flagship) killer phone and enjoy (life? OFC and also) gaming. (sic!)
