What "World of Warcraft" would have looked like, if it were "The Division"

Foreword: Be aware, this is no 1on1 comparison of WoW and TD. I just use WoW to show what's wrong with TD in my opinion! Stay amused!

I come from a long history of videogaming and started back in the years 1985, when most of you were just a yearningly glimmer in the eyes of your father, with an Atari ST playing Moon Patrol, which looked like this:

Now, round about 30 years later, I played "The Division". I quit playing it, since I really find this repetitive gameplay is a shame to video game designers. What's the point in playing the same 15 missions all over again, once with enemies having 100 hitpoints, than with the same enemies having 500 hitpoints and than with enemies having 2000 hitpoints to play an incursion 15 times with enemies having 3000 hitpoints to play it 15 times with enemies having 6000 hitpoints to play it 15 times with enemies having 10000 hitpoints?

It came to my mind, that I once played games like Everquest, Everquest 2, Neocron, Star Wars Galaxy or World of Warcraft, which were less than perfect, but it took casual players like me months to see the whole game. The Division took me 2 weeks to see the whole game, since then I grind my ways from level 30 to gear score 180 so far. All other games I listed took me months to see the whole world. And I seldomly played a quest more than once.

So it came to my mind, what a game like World of Warcraft - I chose it, since it's the most popular one - would look like if it were released in the state like The Division was released. Don't try to stop me with something like I'm comparing apples and oranges. They both call themselves MMO!

So, let's take a look at the World of Wacraft if it would have been made by Ubisoft with the same attitude as The Division:

But don't panic. They will deliver the rest at some point and the world will be constantly increasing. *Place season pass promotion here*

Let's pick a starting race. Since we have only one starting area left, the choices are a bit shortened in The Division:

As we chose our color, we choose our class next:

Ok, that wasn't fair, since all the magic when it comes to classes, happens in the abilities and talents in The Division. Here's an updated sight of things:

Now you enter the huge or not so huge City... erm... World of Warcraft and face your mobs (Mob is for "mobile object", what enemies, the player faced in a game, were called back in those days. They are contrary to none moving objects, like trees or walls. Beware: Water is no mob and there are trees, that can walk, in some games!):

As we fight our way to level 60... no wait... I meant level 15 and we explore this huge, huge world in two months of gameplay... no wait... in one day of gameplay, we reach level cap.

But wait, there is more to come. 6 weeks after the initial release and about 5 weeks after you reached level cap, the first Dungeon hits the World of Warcraft and you can stop beating the **** out of rats and spiders. There is a bigger spider in a hole down in the earth. To kill it, you have to place four crystals of spider killing on the spider. These crystals are brought to you by waves of smaller spiders, trying to protect the bigger spider, which regularly spits at you. Just sit in the hole, kill the smaller spiders and place a crystal of spider killing on the bigger spider once in a while and bamm - FUN! Take a look

But uhhh... there is a bug in the new Dungeon, which leads to this situation:

So, after a few days, the PvP part of World of Warcraft is something like this:

I wonder... when did all this happen and when did the video gaming industrie go all to hell?

Things that were added post 1.0 in WoW are too many to count. I hope you didn't spend a lot of time making this post, as it's just a higher state of gibberish, but still gibberish.

The game's been out for less than three months, it's getting it's second (and largest of the two) content update in 5 days, and the devs are listening and acting upon things the community is asking for.

I want a few more things to be added into a game I'm enjoying immensely so far. Mostly clans/guilds. But yeah, they keep adding stuff and the game keeps getting better. Honest question, Are you not at all having fun with the game?

Actually i expect there will be a lot more content in a year, when the 3 Season Pass DLC´s and other possible Updates are out.
The really big MMO´s out there right now exist for a while and had a lot of Updates to them.

They do not both call themselves mmos, in fact the cms have said on more than one occasion that this isn't an mmo, even the devs have. However, it does have some of the mechanics of an mmo, just without the content to pad it out. That's where they went wrong, they copied things from mmos without looking at why those things worked in those systems.

That's where your entire thread falls apart, you are comparing two different things despite the mechanics being similar, the games themselves are not.

This is basically a single player game that they threw group content on at the end and added a single map for some controlled pvp. So of course it's not going to measure up to an mmo.

It's pretty obvious that games in the past had more content. It's complicated I think.

    * It's more expensive to make games today because making a weapon/armor takes more time because of higher detail, in the past you could churn out way more sets faster.
    * Today players expect voiced acting, in many different languages, that's costly, and something WoW or past online games didn't have much of.
    * Although people now earn 50% more than 10-15 years ago because of inflation(in most countries) the box price on games have not followed because of competition I guess.

*Wow and many other games required a subscription to play.

Because of the financial crisis many countries have about the same Internet speed they had 6-7 years ago, and we can see that in game sizes, games rarely go past 30 GB, Age of Conan back in 2008 was also 25GB or so. Players today play on SSD and not mechanical harddrives with much less space. that also limits game sizes.

    I laughed

But, the Division isn't a true RPG. It's a cover based shooter with RPG-like elements.

Edit: And... The Division is really, REALLY, lacking in content, variation and diversity - compared to most true RPGs.

    Agreed.

Comparing The Division to World of Warcraft, is like comparing vanilla Diablo 3 to World of Warcraft.

    Apples to Lawn Furniture.

Its an Action-RPG like Diablo or Sacred. Its just have cover-shooter play mechanics instead of the usual melee weapon/kick/punch game play.

You could have stopped with the just the sub fee part.

PC gamers are willing to play monthly sub fees. Which go to underwrite the cost of developing new content (as well as "server maintenance")

Console gamers are notorious for their unwillingness to do the same. So---in reality the price of a AAA game at launch has gone from $60 in 1996 dollars, DOWN to about $40....once you adjust for inflation.

People wonder why we're getting games that feel like they are unfinished.....
