    The Killing Fields...

I wanted to add this as a comment on the Ubisoft Community Maps web pages, but it keeps coming back with a "Login to comment", so here goes. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope it helps when and if you play the map.

    The Killing Fields.

This Far Cry 4 map - for the PC - takes a look at what might have happened if Mr. Hoyt of Far Cry 3 fame simply moved his whole drug production operation to his friend’s country… Pagan Min’s Kyrat… This time around it’s you who need to escape his clutches, and Jason has long gone, back to Burbank….

    Here’s a few useful (I hope) tips…

1). Be wary of leaving the basement too quickly ... four of Pagan’s soldiers are pretty close to the exit.....pick up the armor, like you did with the small ammo, and maybe some greenies – there's more further on; (but right now you have no spare health).

2). Over the wall, if you wish, and try your luck in the fields… or hang a right, around the building, there’s lots of cover here, but watch for the bad guys at the big gate… Hillside Village, with its friendly Yaks would be a good place to aim for.

3). There are a couple of ammo/weapons stores around, all marked with the rectangular, blue “Store” sign, and a slew of flags...

4). Don’t be afraid to kill for fear of triggering and being overwhelmed by waves 2, 3, 4 and 5.

I hope you enjoy the map - please feel free to comment as you like or dislike!

    All the best,

    pj_3

Played both these extraction maps over the weekend.. Both are well made, but very different.

Hidden Crater shows AKAFootloose's usual flair for tremendous detail in building a life like world. I am constantly amazed at all the "stuff" he squeezes in. Lots of custom items as well. Shooting from a distance makes this one a sniper's dream, and Footloose supplies all the needed weapons and ammo to make it work, as you follow the path to the extraction point. In fact I would recommend you snipe as many as possible. Although I haven't gone back to play it any other way, I have a feeling it would be much more difficult if you don't. Oh - and thanks for not putting any alligators in the water this time :-)

And speaking of difficult - The Killing Fields is very much all that. Instead of heeding pj's advise I left the basement too soon and BAM - dead. You start with very little. No extra health and only a pistol. Peek out and wait and see what happens before you leave. Playing the game from the fields is tough. If you don't keep moving, keep low, and hidden, you may again find yourself overwhelmed once the alarm goes off. You'll only have to work with what you pick up from dead enemies, and the green plants. As he recommends, find the the friendly's camp for a weapons cache and a good vantage point to take out many of the soldiers in the first area. The author places quite a few of them where you can't always see them until they start firing. Quite challenging.

Hahahahaha! Thank You for this mini-review, rjdrive! It means a great deal to have someone show their appreciation in this manner - both of these are great reviews.

The Killing Fields is not really that difficult: if you count the three heads passing the exit, one can, crouching, auto-pickup a jacket, and then sneak a look to the right, where, under the house - there's an Army Defender just waiting for a 9mm slug in the back of his head. One can then safely spend five minutes chopping green things for later.... Hang a right around the back of the building and sneak along the terrain to the trees down by the Main Gate - keeping in cover, as "the guys" like to meet there for a chin-wag. They won't see you walk over the left corner of the left wall, and from there you can go right over to the Yak compound, where you can work your way up the Hillside to the Ammo Store. Watch for, and take out three or four AI on the way... In the Store are a pair of Auto-Cross's, two P-416's and a pair of SA50's - plus ammo piles, mines, C4 and other nice bits.... Everything one needs to create a clean path to the Buzzer at the top of the hill at the far side of the Fields is there..
The major hint following this "part 1" is to leave the Store, and, still hugging the left side terrain, go down and cross the road and take out the two guys in the two small buildings at the foot of a set of stone steps: go up those steps, but be very careful at the arched gate at the top - there are people waiting there with a welcome for you... Through and up the next steps to the Big Store, which is a full service ammo store with a firing range attached. Around the back is a scaffold that will give you access to the hill behind the house. From here you have a full view of every part of the map, routes, defenses, etc., and can have a ball with any weapon you wish - or - you can selectively snipe the left bluff, taking them with the Auto-Cross and SA50. Slide down that whacking great rock and Run, Forrest, Run! You can do this map in x minutes........... There! wasn't that easy!

Seriously - there are at least five ways through this extraction - not all as easy as the left bluff exit described above, but once you done the map a couple or three times - go back and look through some of the buildings, to, to see how they've been done. I take my hat off to AKAFootloose for how these look, for his teaching and demonstrating - through his own maps, his hints and suggestions - the "How-to" of creating detailed buildings. I can think of no other person that has put as much time, work, effort and skill into his maps - all for the free entertainment of others. He is very active on the Ubi site as well as the FC4 Map Editor group site. Publicly - Thank You AKAF!

And thank you again, rjdrive - it was very nice to wake up to your post today1

    All the Best,

As someone who has created a few maps - very crude, nothing as nice as yours or AKAFootloose - I understand the need for feedback. All my maps have been Outpost, so far. But the more extraction maps I play, the more tempted I am to try my hand at one. Based on your second post, I need to revisit Killing Fields to see more of it. Thanks for the great work.

Hi PJ_3 I recently tried your Killing Fields 2 and was amazed at the detail you had put into it. I love the varied areas that all would fit in the real Far Cry map, it made for multiple ways to approach the map and was great to sneak around too.

Well, Sir Magadite - 'tis indeed an honour to have my meager skills recognised by a master of the map-making community! Your own work was recommended to me by one of the other masters - AKAFootloose - and I have played them, enjoyed them and voted them (yes - up!!!). I still have much to learn, but if you liked that map - you might also get a kick out of playing "The Burning Fields" - an Outpost, with almost the same village - but the change makes it feel completely like a different map - and I personally like it better.
Anyway - I'm sure looking forward to your next one: I have both "Villa" and "Arena" as Favorites.

Thank you for you nice comments!
