This is about one of the Missing Persons missions. We get to search for an ex-partner of Jessica Kandel (I forget if it is actually her ex-wife or not).
Despite appearances, we actually find her alive.
The mission ends, and... nothing.
No radio call (even Heather Lau got that). No reaction from Alexis Chen herself, no JTF squad showing up to escort her to safety.
We don't even get a "thank you" from doctor Kandel, either by radio or when we get back to base. And, unlike Heather Lau who can be seen and heard playing her new guitar in the base later, Alexis Chen never appears in the game again, as far as I can tell.
This bothers me, mainly because there seems to have been quite a bit of effort put into the mission as far as writing and voice acting goes. The mission isn't finished. This is a shame, especially since I know the developers are abundantly capable of doing better.
These attempts att fleshing out the supporting characters could be great. While they do have a bit of personality, they still fade into the backdrop all too often. Adding even this bit of flavour is a great way of making the people in the base, and the game world in general, feel a bit more alive.
That doesn't work if the missions with their associated little stories are just dropped off at the end, rather than resolved.
My suggestion:
* Have the agent actually speak to Alexis Chen, and then have a JTF squad turn up and protect her (despawn all as soon as the agent is out of sight).
* Radio message from Kandel, where she awkwardly expresses gratitude.
* Back at base, Alexis Chen can then be found with the counsellor in the Medical Wing, or occasionally talking to doctor Kandel.
* Done.
I agree it would have been a little considerate of Dr. Kendal to at least say 'thank you'. It was a little odd seeing a woman playing the piano along the east river so close to where some Rikers were hanging out. I think some of the echoes were implying depression and a possible problem with addiction. Would it have been a 'happy ending' to see her in the BoO? The story in the Division is dark and unfortunately I think the woman either commited sucide after we saw her or she moved south towards Stanton.
Nice thread.
While she was playing the piano she did speak and indicated that she was hoping to be found. I really don't think that she would have committed suicide based upon what we discovered of her during the mission. However the setting was very dangerous and many other bad things could have happened to her.
Our character can't have conversations, no, but in several encounters we have to "speak" with, for example, a JTF officer. "Speaking" just means to go up to them and use the Interact button. That's what I was talking about.Originally Posted by TAS_MAJ0R_K0NG Go to original post
And I do think that there is some very good work on the story side of the game, but many of the smaller missions do not seem to be finished. That is a shame. My suggestions at the end are things I believe could be achieved and put in by the developers with a relative minimum of effort, but they would go a long way towards making the missions seem finished.
Heather Lau is another character who just seems to "switch off" at the end of her associated mission, but as I and you remarked she does indeed turn up in the post office later whereas Alexis Chen just disappears.
When I think of conversations in a CRPG I think of games like Deux Ex HR where there is chosen dialogue and the choices affect the outcome.Originally Posted by deCarabasHJ Go to original post
In my game she just remained at the piano playing.Originally Posted by deCarabasHJ Go to original post
She's safe and sound now as of the 1.2 patch in the BoO alongside Faye's sister with a grand piano.
