    Can one skip the Dark Zone?

    Full disclosure: This game came to me by way of a new video card. So, I'm not super invested or passionate about the current issues that have been percolating through the forums of late. Frankly, I'm nowhere near the point where I'd be able to participate anyway. I am enjoying the game so far as a semi-single-player experience. The NPC combat mechanics are fine. At least, they present a few interesting puzzles on the first play-through. I like listening to the radio chatter for the missions, and I like collecting the intel. For me, it might be feasible to avoid contact with the more frustrating parts of the game for the time being and still walk away with a mostly positive experience.

    With that in mind, I want to ask a couple very specific questions to gauge just how far I'll be able to go.
    1. Is there anything inside the DZ that is required to complete the main story?
    2. Are there any missions or interesting bits of intel inside the DZ?
    3. Is the challenging content tiered? If so, can clearing higher tiers be done with the items found in lower tiers?
    4. Are there any items found only in the DZ that are necessary (or nearly so) to clear any challenging content outside of the DZ?
    5. Are there any items found only in the DZ that make clearing that challenging content outside of the DZ less tedious?

    The simple answers is no to all of your questions.

    You can complete the single player PvE without setting foot in the DZ. The tiered DZ is not dropping anything higher ranked in DZ06. you get the same crap there as in DZ01. The DZ is so full of cheaters at the moment play there is very difficult.

    You can get better gear and guns in the DZ, but it is not needed out side of the DZ.

    So the way it is now, the DZ is 100% optional. You can do the PvE in the single player with matchmaking (e.g. incusions and challenging difficulty when you hit 30). I will say that once the daily content to earn phoenix credits gets played, I head into the DZ because otherwise it gets a bit stale. I am on xbone though, so there's no hackers.

    All the gear I have I got from drops outside the DZ. My guns all came from the Base of operations vendors for phoenix credits. It will take a bit longer to get the gear because you have to do the daily challenges to get the phoenix credits, then do it the next day and once a week do incursions.

    I think that once they fix the DZ for you guys on PC everything will be a lot more fun for you. Right now the only real point of getting the best gear is so you can go rouge or hunt rogues in the DZ, just like end game PvP in destiny or something. I wouldn't quite give up on tit's game yet, it's gonna get better.

    No.. hence the major issues with the game currently.

    To complete challenge missions you need yellow gear, to get yellow gear you need the DZ now.

    At 198GS, 240k dps, 70k health, and 13k skillpower, I'd have to disagree with you. I have no DZ gear on and I'm still a very effective solo player and team member.

    1 – no;

    2 – no, besides one daily mission that actually grants you a boost in DZ experience, which is used to level up in the DZ (it’s a different level branch from the main story one, going up to 99) and thus allowing you to buy higher gear level blueprints from the DZ vendors;

    3 – not sure I understand your question correctly, but there are enemies of different levels in the DZ – 30, 31 and 32; they all seem to mostly drop the same gear level equipment (163) with a very low chance of dropping something a tad better; the level 32 mobs are a bit harder to handle, but with the 182 gear level items from BoS and a team of 3 you should be fine;

    4 – well, the 204 gear level blueprints (high end) can only be bought from DZ; also, two Nomad set blueprints and weekly changing 191 Nomad pieces; for doing Falcon Lost on challenging you kinda’ need 204 equipment; besides that though, any other content outside the DZ can be handled with 163 high end set; there is however a rumour that the next Incursion will require a minimum gear level of 220, which means you will have to get 240 gear level equipment, which now comes exclusively from doing Falcon Lost on challenging difficulty;

    5 – yes; whether you choose to gear yourself in 204 high ends or a combination between them and the gear sets, the challenging missions will start going a lot smoother for you;
    So you see…it’s not a yes or no answer to your main question. The highest pieces of gear (that you will apparently need in order to be able to play future free added content) come from the light zone, but in order to have the capacity to obtain them, you kinda’ need to have what the DZ has to offer. DZ is also the place to find occasional pieces of 191 gear sets, as they can be dropped by DZ bosses or can be found in supply drops.

    My advice: don’t get scared by all the rage in this forum. Yes, there are a lot of problems with the DZ and the game now and this rage is justified (although hardly constructive), but the DZ is playable and it’s an area with a different feeling than the rest of the map. I definitely believe you’ll miss experiencing the full potential of the game if you avoid it.

    P.S. To counter various voices that may disagree with my statement that “the DZ is playable”: I play on PC, everything sh*tty that can happen to a player in there did happen to me too (still does occasionally) , yet I am able spend at least half of my game time there, solo, at only 182 gear level.

    You can't get the best guns in the game. The patterns for those come from the DZ. Well, technically you could get a drop, but that would be some extreme luck on your side to get a drop with the right talents and stats. So as long as you don't care about having a high end weapon. You really don't need to go in there anymore. Prior to 1.1 it was necessary, but not so much now.

    Is there anything inside the DZ that is required to complete the main story?
    - no DZ is not part of the main story
    Are there any missions or interesting bits of intel inside the DZ?
    - some new assignments require killing AI on DZ
    Is the challenging content tiered? If so, can clearing higher tiers be done with the items found in lower tiers?
    - item are better on more difficult modes (challenging gives the best loot), but if you have low equipment, you might find it hard to finish challenging modes
    Are there any items found only in the DZ that are necessary (or nearly so) to clear any challenging content outside of the DZ?
    - no, but there are BLUEPRINTS inside DZ that you can only purchase using DC (darkzone credits, and can be obtained in DZ only), which can make your character stronger, DZ03 safe house sells good weapon blueprints
    Are there any items found only in the DZ that make clearing that challenging content outside of the DZ less tedious?
    - you can get HIGH END weapons outside DZ, but blueprints (if you want to craft rather than hunting) are available inside DZ
