Having trouble with a saber cat on Sayla's mission in Survival.

    Hi guys,

It's one of Sayla's missions where she sends you to find a hunter gone missing in the bone caves. There's a bunch of cave lions and a saber cat. I can tame the cave lions but the saber cat needs to be taken down to half health before I can tame him (which I think is a good feature). Problem is it's really bloody hard. My lion tries to defend me but the cat makes short work of him, rushes me and that's all she wrote.

I was wondering how you guys handled it, and is it a big deal if you don't do this quest?

    Cheers.

Hey Human_Male (love the name by the way, really), I know what you're saying. This is easily one of the hardest missions to do, because they ask so much of you so early on in the game. Unfortunately, it's mandatory to complete this mission before moving forward with the rest of the story.

I do have some advice for you, and it's simpler than what you might think

Forget taming this demon. You will have many, many more chances to tame a Sabre Tooth in a less hostile environment, and one that isn't paramount to staying alive/moving forward with the story. You should kill the beast. Here's a play by play of what to do.

    1) In order to kill this thing, make sure all of the lions are dead/tamed first. They're just gonna be a pain in your backside.
    2) Call your strongest beast, make him wait in the center of the main cave area, while you wait with the hunter on the elevated rock.
    3) DO NOT LIGHT THE FIRE BY THE HUNTER - THIS WILL HARM YOU MORE THAN HELP YOU - FIRE WILL SET OFF CLOSE TRAPS
    4) Lay down as many traps as you can by the ledge to your right and the path leading up to the hunter on the left. Traps, traps, traps. Traps everywhere. Then put some on the ground near where your beast has been waiting. If you've done this a couple times and know the path of the Sabre Tooth, that will help a lot.
    5) Now help the hunter, give him green leaves, and ready your bow. DO NOT SET THE SABRE TOOTH ON FIRE. If you do, the fire on it's body will set off the traps it runs into before it can damage it. It's stupid, but that's just how the game works. When you see the Sabre Tooth, pump arrows into him, but when he gets too close, switch to the spear
    6) Aim for the face and hope he runs through some of those traps

That should make short work of him, but know that it IS stressful and there's still a chance it could go wrong. Please let me know how this worked for you!

the sabertooth will also still go for meat even if you can't tame it, use that to get him stationary to hit him with an easy spear...

I was having a hard time with a sabercat aslo.

FIRE is your friend equip a spear, light it with fire, then when the saber gets close scare him, throw 1 or 2 spear in fire at him, then you will be able to tame it

    Thanks very much guys.

You nailed it, Rogue... traps did the trick. I hadn't even considered them but I laid some out as you suggested and it worked. The cat came at me as usual and nearly took my head off as usual, so I stumbled back and healed, turned around and was greeted by the "Skin Sabertooth Tiger" prompt. Just like that. I didn't even know I'd killed it. Boy did I breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks a million.

This just made my day. I'm glad to hear it! - traps took me a while to remember to use, but they help a lot when you know where the enemy is coming from. Just ask if you have anymore questions!

I'm currently 50% through SM on Expert with Second Chance....it's gonna be tough to complete the full challenge!
