Gear Score inquiry, and are Sets actually garbage?

I'm not sure I understand the logic behind the current scoring system for gear. Why are set pieces that radically lower my stats and have no talents sitting at 191, while my HE gear is at 182 and outclasses them like mad? Which brings me to my next question:
I am by no means a top-notch agent, I don't have all the best HE gear there is to have, but what's with the disparity between set pieces and my stuff? Are Set pieces supposed to be awful? Even put together they're dropping my stats so much that these "big buffs" aren't even worth it... Am I doing something wrong?

If you call strikers 50% crit damage and sentrys 30% headshot damage garbage then you should rethink your builds...

The only thing I agree on are two things:

    1. no talent on the items
    2. the set bonuses are rather lackluster except the Sentry one.

You lose out on some talents for potentially better gear. Gear score only indicates the roll bracket. For example, 240 gear can get as high as 675 on star rolls if I recall correctly. Your knee pads and mask, as well, typically now only have "eh" talents. Kneepads I can live without any of the bonuses, as well as Mask, so Strikers in and I get bonus armor damage for PVE, yay. Gloves are nice if you have Savage, but if you don't, no loss to replace that with say Sentry's gloves.

Sentry is amazing. Pair it with Reckless or Overheal chest and Savage gloves.

    The rest is forgettable.

p.s. there is supposed to be a tank set coming with Broken Circle. It gives 20% armor. Im willing to bet it won't break cap.

191 is basically level 30 HE. 214 could roll better stats than what you have. Put sentry or strikers 4 piece on and watch a heavy die in less than 1 clip from an mp5. I kept my reckless chest piece and one other item on too.

I will get a screenshot of the 240 I got when I get home, with the stat roll brackets. I think that'll cover it.

I'm probably just getting bad rolls on my drops then. Which is kind of upsetting considering the easiest way to pull off my build is by re-rolling attributes. Which I can't do if I need to re-roll the terrible stats.

Time to work harder, not smarter.

The gear sets are also hugely different by gear score alone. The 191s are garbage unless you need a filler for the talent.

The gear sets are not balanced around solo play, they are for team play and the talents act as force multipliers.

If one of your team is using the sentry set he is buffing all your team's damage, this gives your strikers a huge buff along with their own bonus which in turn boosts your tech guy with a huge skillpower buff.

Throw that into a set up where you replicate the old style MMO trinity and it means your tank is buffing your DPS guys damage by debuffing the mobs and your healer gets bigger and faster heals to spam around.

Ok, so at the moment nobody is really doing that, but then nobody is actually trying to beat the Challenge mode without glitching it so we will see how it works when people have to work.

so prior to sets I had 2900 firearms and 2500 stamina I did about 600k dmg per headshot crit with pulse active with my M1A and I was in full 31 HE gear, now with 4 piece sentry set my survivability is exactly the same 2450 stam and same exotic dmg resil and armor and health. also firearms is only 2950 now but here is the kicker. because of the headshot bonus/elite dmg bonus/sentry 4 piece bonus I now deal 1.3million per shot with that same M1A with a crit and pulse active.

Edit: note that 1.3million is using only 214 gear not even 240 so eventually I expect to get to 1.6-2mil per shot eventually.
