What causes LAG in players maps?

Just wondering what all causes LAG in players maps? is it only "too many" AI's? and please do not say your video card as I know this comes in play indeed however am looking at creating maps what should one look at in preventing lag for others.

By the way am talking for PC platform

Yes, too many NPCs will cause lag, but so will too many objects in general. The player perspective can also contribute. If the player cant "see" a lot of the map at one time, it will ease that stress. The map editor has a "soft" limit on objects and AI. Follow that limit if you want to be safe. But, and I am sure other map makers will confirm, you can exceed that limit to a degree without too much effect.

I have made 3 maps, and exceeded the limit in all of them. Only the Rhino map has ever given me any lag, and only while all the rhinos are still alive. I use my own rig as a test bed. If it doesn't lag for me, I can be pretty sure it will not for the majority of other players. As you can see from my signature, it's not exactly a shining example of the latest PC tech. I'm sure most can boast much better specs. The 560 Ti has only 1 GB of RAM. It's practically an antique in video card land.
