    Spike Traps

How do you draw animals to the spike traps? I was hunting the snowblood wolf, set all the traps, threw some bait down, but they wouldn't come close enough. I had my sabretooth tiger with me, but I know that didn't put them off. The first time I went after them, they killed it before they killed me. Am I supposed to offer myself as human bait then hope I can outrun them on the way back? I hope not, because that doesn't sound like a plan.

Stranger still was that my tiger walked across one of the set traps but didn't activate it.

yeah basically i just set them and then once the beast was chasing me ran through the trap so they'd follow me through it... Not as useful for the snowblood, more helpful with the bear and mammoth as slowing techniques to get some spears in....

I think even the traps you throw down from your inventory work in the same general sort of way.

I also tried baiting those ones with poor success although some creatures especially wolves at night will spring them trying to reach you on occasion. I also think they do not activate when your pets go over them - I wrongly thought before they did - but what I now think happened was that an enemy sprung the trap when my pet was also in range attacking the same so it took damage too in fact enough to kill it if I recall correctly. I think having Great Beasts chase you over the traps as HorTyS suggests is the best bet, get your favourite fur running mocasins or whatever on - good luck.

Confession, mostly fluffed the trapping first time around in my early Great Beast Hunts and ended up taking them down the hard way.

Thanks for that. I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to get them to chase me, partly because I get very disorientated when running in first person and partly because I thought I could activate one myself by accident. Might try getting the owl to drop a couple of bombs on them if I can get them still for a second or two.

Yesterday did the hunt for the Blood Fang for the second time this time without HUD, Mimimap, reticule and all the rest on Expert. Took me a while, sadly for all the traps I set I think only one may have caught the beast others were setoff by night time attacking wolves and other wandering critters prematurely. I was assisted via a cave bear which seemed the way to go as a supertank. Between the bear and multiple thrown, sometimes on fire, spears the actual fighting proved pretty easy. It was the finding the cursed thing and waiting for it to show up that tried my patience a little. Out of interest I am pretty sure the thing did not manage to wound me even once though I did get bitten by wolf. Also a fire that I accidentally started spread enough to kill a friendly resulting in one less tribesman in the village. You would think they would have run away from the flames.
