Trust me when I say I feel your pain. I've been part of many game franchises that I very much cared about, and when they changed to appeal to a different audience, I was heart broken.
However.
How are you even surprised? This is Ubisoft, makers of Assassins bloody Creed. They are obviously very much a developer that appreciates human history.
It is their creative license, not yours. This is a marvelous game, one that I personally give an 8.5/10 and honestly if you dont like it... guess what? There's a whole horde of prehistory fans who outnumber you and are currently buying this game.
You're shooter players aren't you? Then you should know this acronym: HTFU. Hell, go play The Division or something!
That being said, it is an odd choice for Ubisoft to make. I might've even liked an Assassins Creed Primal more than this.
this post basically says "hey everyone who liked what far cry was, I am familiar with the feeling of not liking when a franchise makes drastic changes and I didn't like it, but I happen to like the change this one made so shut up and go play something else"
you can take that train of thought straight to hell.
I think there is more content in Primal than it can seem but compared to FC4 it does appear gameplay wise overall a smaller game. I also think the rrp is a bit overpriced if you pay the full amount luckily I got my copy via an online offer. Actually thinking about it deeper I gained my copy via a Christmas gift token so technically I privately paid nothing which may contribute to why I am so very happy with it.Originally Posted by HorTyS Go to original post
That in my head I feel it really needs an expansion to flesh out its mechanics not just its campaign probably says something. Maybe a little extra free content via patches would help convince doubters that this is / was a good buy and not a reskin or dressed up dlc acting as a full game that some have complained about online.
Estimations of value however remains exceptionally relative to the individual - and hard to judge - especially when comparing Primal with very different products but... if you consider the amount of content / develpment time put into games such as Fallout 4, or Witcher 3 for the same sort of rrp Primal does come in somewhat light in weight.
The PIE and other deep research done as part of the development is pretty cool and helps to make the game a little special but it does not add significantly to actual gameplay only the games background. Ubi also risk all the good of such realism via having bomb dropping owls, outsized inventories and other heavy contrivances that seem at odds including the use of more or less the old HUD and minimap - I still think best turned off. Sadly the way it is executed in game the PIE has also taken away as much as it gives as you lose the joy of listening in on all the little background chatter and other stories that helped fill in the setting of FC4.
Less weapon options via a liner weapon progression with clubs and spears means that previous versions are simply obsolete and no longer available with no ability to actually mix and match the customisation of weapons. For those who say - but it is the stone age - weapons could have been made via say different types of spike, sharp bladed or blunt headed stones worked or otherwise with animal teeth and so on too added to various haft types creating even greater variety and private choice to such basic items as simple clubes. Spears could have used the same system and even arrows to some extent with better wood making better shalfts and better feathers making better flights. Better shafts and flights improving accuracy whilst better arrowheads improve damage possibly even penetration against armour. In fact better materials could even improve some items general durability. The more I consider this the more great it seems as a mechanic that would have made crafting so much more significant and fun to do. A real feature of the game rather than a throw away cheapening instant thing done on the fly. You could be proud of your hand crafted weapons even feel an attachment to them.
In addition they could have had different skins: coloured paint or carvings feathers bindings beadwork etc. The approach taken of just providing set items seems compared to the other iterations a true gameplay step backwards when Primal could have been going forward adding even more depth. Instead you get less options to adjust your equipment than in FC 3 and 4. To be honest I think some greater weapon variety really should be patched in at the very least the ability to use previous more basic weapon types with those using less, more easily gained, resources although that would be a cheap fix at best. Actually I would prefer the whole thing be revised in a DLC that deepened all the hunting gathering and crafting because to me these elements in Primal should be at least as important as the combat.
The idea of making all your own gear is a really interesting concept mightily underplayed here.
Still it is always easy with hindsight as a player to say this ought to have been included or that all of which is development time. Sadly nonetheless I think Ubi have become a bit too obsessed with streamlining their mechanics down to the point where some stuff begins to seem far too shallow and risks losing both its potential and appeal.
Yet I must stress that Primal is - even as it stands - a fun FC game, if probably imo more worth £30 - £40 rather than £50 unless they do up the game a little with some added content in patches or even in a DLC that grants extra backward value via also addressing some of the main games weaknesses compared to past iterations. Hopefully because this one was a departure they are listening in to the fans and players positive criticism and thinking now about how they might improve the game including expanding fleshing out some rather simplistic mechanisms.
PS Edited multiple times due to typos and added inspiration.
PPS For some reason this game has got me very vocal perhaps because sometimes the background seems better - far deeper - than some of the current gameplay content.
Same here. I think people shouldn't treat this issue as simple as "Should Primal have been slapped with the 'Far Cry' title or not?".Originally Posted by l3ushwacker Go to original post
Because what defines 'Far Cry' to people differs completely.
People who enjoyed Far Cry for the absurd amount of gathering, fetching and crafting are certainly going to enjoy Primal.
But the people who know the Far Cry title for the intense heat-of-the-moment missions where everything goes to **** and their adrenaline starts pumping while taking out many foes... they're gonna be bored out of their minds with Primal.
I will say I agree with the resource gathering and constant crafting to replenish weapons is tedious at best. So glad one of the first things I did was "turn off loot animations" so I can just pick up stone and wood as I'm running past them... If they didn't have that option, I would be significantly more annoyed by this game... Never used it in FC 4, but there wasn't enough gathering stuff in that game that it became an issue, it certainly would have in this game. I played the prologue before turning it off & realized that quickly that it was going to get monotonous, so I flicked that switch & never looked back.
