Hollywood likes the public to believe that a suppressor automatically makes a gun sound like the typical 'Pewt' in movies. Fact is, it doesn't. Suppressors 'suppress', they don't silence. On a rifle like a typical M4 platform (and all subtypes etc) you need to use subsonic ammo if you want the most out of it. Sure, you're going to eliminate the major report of the rifle leaving the barrel, but that round is still traveling faster than Mach 1. A 556 round still makes a loud, considerable crack that can be heard from a pretty good distance if you use standard ammo with a suppressor. The second major issue is mechanical. If you have an M4 platform at home, pull the charging handle then tap the forward assist. That's the sound of the bolt cycling. Every time a round is fired, that sound will be made. There are ways to mitigate the mechanical end and quiet it down, but not much. These guns can be made quieter, but 'silent' isn't nearly so easy.
So what I'd like to see? As I said, make it count. Use subsonic rounds with suppressors for maximum effect on target. Use suppressors with standard ball rounds? Well maybe everyone within 300 yards is alerted. Start with plenty of subsonic ammo and make it rare. Use it at your own discretion.
Weapons I'd like to see heavily represented for Ghosts:
M4/416/M6 - Same platform. It's going to be around in the future and for a good while. Its a dependable system with a proven track record.
M1A/M14 - Same as the M4. Sometimes you need penetration. An M4 is going to have a real bad day trying to poke its way through some cover material like brick walls and structures. The old, reliable 762 NATO from an M14 or M1A has never had a problem. There's a saying that goes with these rifles, 'Turning cover into concealment'.
Cheytac 408 - New. High speed. Reach out and touch someone at a mile reliably.
Kriss Vector - Formerly TDI Kriss Super V or whatever. Ten names, same platform. Option this one in 9mm and .45ACP. Its a game-changer for SMG's.
MP5 & MP7 - Both reliable as hell and do the job very well. I've got a preference for the 5-series over the 7, but I just like the flexibility of the design. It's mostly personal.
AK-47 - Want to be stealthy? Don't drop a bunch of Lake City 556 brass all over Bolivia. Use what your enemy uses and plink out dirty steel case rounds. Leave them wondering if its the Americans or some other rival cartel taking down their guys across a target zone.
