Looks like some kind of thermal optic. When I was in 10th Mountain we had big goofy thermal optics like that that we'd have in the turrets of our trucks.

I wonder if video game developers will continue to use the G36 line of rifles even with all the flak being fired at H&K and now that the Bundeswehr is phasing it out of service. Though it may mean seeing more of the HK 417/G27 from now on.
