I was thinking this earlier, as I trawled the Steam upcoming games list. With most games, I can look at them and instantly know what they are. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a cinematic puzzly action game. New Homeworld is an RTS. Far Cry Primal is an open world historic version of Far Cry 3/4. These games are very easy to know what they are without much digging, just because they follow pretty set rules.
Hell, even the games I don't know much about I can figure out without much effort. Googling Oceanhorn told me it's a PC version of Ocarina/Zelda. Googling Oxenfree told me it's a heavily choice based adventure game made by some ex Telltale guys. Googling Dragon's Dogma lets me know it's a stylish action game mixed with a fantasy open world. Ok, now I have a good idea of what that is.
But the Division? A game coming out in March? I know next to nothing about.
I know it has classes? Maybe. It might just have skill trees. Actually, I just know you can be a healer, a tank, or a supporty type. Maybe other types to, but heck if I know, they haven't shown anything about how the classes work yet. Heck, they haven't even shown how the classes I "know" about work yet.
I know it has a Dark Zone. I know you can just randomly jump into this Dark Zone whenever you want by wandering over to it/jumping the barrier. I know how the Dark Zone works. But anything outside of that Dark Zone? Heck if I know how it works/looks/is. Is it instanced? Is it large? How big is the Dark Zone comparatively. How big is the overall map if this is an open world game. What do you do in the areas that aren't the Dark Zone. Can you be fired upon at any time, or only in the Dark Zone.
I know it's got a multiplayer/co-op focus. Cool. I know it can be played singleplayer. Cool? What do you do though. Like are there questgivers? Do you pick up missions? Does it have questhubs? Is there an overarching campaign? Does it have an ending/finale mission? Does this take place in the area outside of the Dark Zone? If it's got missions, can you share missions with friends? Or do they just get whatever mission you are on when they join your game through proxy. Since it's drop in/drop out, can you play the entire game both with friends, as well as by yourself? How does the game world react/adjust for that. What do you do on a regular gameplay loop basis.
Like what IS the Division. Is it a game like Rust/DayZ/ all those other survival games, in which you just wander a city all day with your friends looking for copper wire in old buildings? Is it like Borderlands, with a big meaty campaign filled with loot, bosses, and reasons to invite your friends over to go kill those bosses and steal their loot? Is it like Destiny, with a few core zones/combat loops, that "has" a campaign, but it's mainly just to familiarize yourself with the world before you start the rep/daily grind like an MMO? What is the core 2 hour gameplay loop you'd expect to be going through if you bought the Division? Because right now, I still have absolutely zero idea what this game actually is.
