    A typical scenario.
I'm playing offline and get into a dogfight. We chase each other around the sky and I get in a few shots but not enough to do much damage - the enemy is weaving around too much. At last I get on his tail. Ah great - this time he hasn't seen me. Get closer and closer - line up a a nice shot at the base of the wing - squeeze the trigger and ...Nothing. 'Out of ammo'
This has happened so often that I'm convinced that the AI are programmed to present themselves as sitting ducks as soon as the player runs out of ammo.

    Such cruel people these programmers!

Well, I guess you have to fool them :P. Don't fire anything until they are "sitting ducks" .

I never fire anything if they are more then 150m away in a dogfight.

When booming and zooming, I start to fire from further away.

Also, don't try to hold the target in your sight at all times, this is not possible when he is aware of you, flying behind him. Just let it slide through your gunsight and give a one or two second burst when you think it is the time for that.

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

ye shall be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be measured
    to you again.

Hmm i used to hold from firing until very close (<170m). Now i realise that with smaller cannon (<20mm) you can actually start to fire from around 300m (<300m). The smaller cannons have higher rate of fire and they're affected less by the gravity. Of course if you really want to conserve ammo (for targeting more than two targets) shoot when you're really close (<170m). Anyway i set my convergence at 140m. But online i say shoot whenever you got a chance and within reasonable range. It's a totally different rule for online.
