So thanks to my job it looks like I will be doing a lot of traveling in 2016, in particular Feb-Sep so I was hoping someone could recommend to me a good gaming laptop. I have an old alienware M14x R2 that definitely will not fit bill, not impressed with it at all. Abyways I want to be able to run it maxed out settings, or at least as much as possible, that will hold 60 FPS so any recommendations will definitely help. I am very unfamiliar wtih PC gaming and I know laptops are far from ideal, but I want/need to be able to play while traveling.
I'm definitely not an expert on this kind of thing, so if you're on Reddit, I would suggest asking the guys and gals on the PC Master Race subreddit; they definitely know their stuff!
And while you're there, pop on over to The Division's subreddit and say hi![]()
Gaming laptops are always a tricky subject. Processing power, graphics cards, etc. If you're getting a gaming laptop to play games like The Division and Far Cry Primal, I would wait until the minimum requirements are available for each game and then get some advice. It's hard to say what to get when we don't know what they'll require yet.
The ASUS ROG is the frontrunner for my purchase so far, MAYBE the alienware 17 but I dunno after my current laptop from them. I believe the recommend specs are out, I found:
Minimum Requirements
- OS: Windows XP / Vista
- CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ / Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz
- Ram: 3GB
- Hard Drive: 20GB
- DirectX: DX11
- Video Card: AMD R7 250 / Nvidia Geforce GTS 450
Recommended Requirements
- OS: Windows 7
- CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T / Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz
- Ram: 6GB
- Hard Drive: 20GB
- DirectX: DX11
- Video Card: AMD R9 280 / Nvidia Geforce GTX 760
Uh Where did you find this? Source?Originally Posted by WP_Hitman Go to original post
The only advice I can give is from my personal experience. Your mileage may vary.
I was recently (2015) looking for a laptop and all the ones at the Currys and PC world had either a good graphics card and a crappy processor or a good processor and a crappy graphics card. I was looking for something with the best of both worlds. I knew (one of) the newest processors was the intel i7 and that a quad core was the better than single. I also knew that the Nvidia Geforce was (one of) the best graphics cards. I ultimately found my way to PC specialist as the only manufacturer that fit both these into one laptop. I believe the one I got was called an Optimus. I thought this was quite pricy by most standards, but since you buy alianware that probably isn't a factor.
Been there and done that. Several years ago I started travelling more in my job and I went out and bought a gaming laptop to carry on my travels. Without even talking about hardware specs I can relate some of my experiences that may help.Originally Posted by WP_Hitman Go to original post
First, gaming laptops are large and heavy. Carrying one in an airport in addition to everything else and including your work laptop, this can be a big challenge. I eventually found a Timbuk2 bag that was big enough to hold my work laptop and gaming laptop and the huge power supply that came with it. Carrying it in airports almost broke my shoulder (not exaggerating) and I am fairly big, 6'4" and 240lbs.
Second, hotel internet speeds pretty much universally suck and especially so for gaming. I normally stay in Marriott's and Hilton's. Always have a wi-fi hotspot or be able to tether on your phone, just in case. Then there is the issue of lag caused by latency. Doesn't matter if it is the hotel's wi-fi or your personal hotspot the higher latency impacted my performance during the game and the game's experience.
Then there is the issue of the laptop itself. My biggest grief with gaming laptops is a general lack of ability to tweak the bios settings. Things like C-state, EIST, power management, etc. There is just no way a laptop can compare to purpose built PC for the same amount of money. Gaming on a laptop is like racing in a golf cart.
This made me giggle cause its so true, yet ive been gaming (PC wise) on a laptop since 2007. I main consoles though.Originally Posted by javajoejunkie Go to original post
