i experience sudden crashes while gaming, sometimes in the middle of an explosion.
i just bought a new gaming rig with 6700k with macho rev. b, msi gaming m5, msi gtx 980 ti, 16gb kingston hyperx ddr4 2133 (compatible specs of mainboard), playing on a clean win 7 x64 with all the latest drivers.
it doesn't matter if i overclock the 980 ti or not.
the cpu and ram is running on stock settings, no oc either.
are my components damaged or is the game known to crash randomly ?
the temps of cpu are 56 max and gpu is 76 max, it's a tower with 3 case fans and a vented corsair hx 850i psu.
windows is fresh installed on a new 500 gb crucial mx200 ssd.
sometimes the game crashes after even 1 minute of playtime. sometimes i can play an hour without a crash.
i really don't know what to do here..
gta v is also crashing after about 2 hours of gameplay, temps are all good.
i am not using rtss or msi afterburner or any overlay software.
could be your in game settings and the Nvidia drivers ..see this thread https://forums.geforce.com/default/t...-in-far-cry-4/ go to the last few pages ..
also try running Uplay as an Admin and verify your game files may help in case something didn't install right

i keep all gameworks settings OFF ..but i only have a GTX 960 ..you might get away with SOME being used .. just not all
my settings in game are
resolution 1920 X 1080
vsync - on
quality settings
motion blur off - not a fan of it ..
Textures - Ultra
Shadows - High
Post FX -Ultra
Geometry - Very High
Vegetation- Ultra
Environment - Ultra
water - Ultra
ambient occusion setting is SSBC
and useing SMAA for Antialising
god rays - off- not a fan of how it looks
fur - off
trees relief -off
in advanced settings
triple buffer - off
Vsync mode - normal
game looks fine to me and plays stutter free on my system with zero crashes
i would try the game with no Gameworks settings and see if it crashes .. if it doesn't open a Support ticket with Nvidia i did and they never answered it nor fixed the drivers
but sadly yes its a driver issue as if i use older drivers i can turn more things on .. that's not an option to you since your GTX980 Ti card is not supported by the older drivers.. i also am limited by the older drivers as my card is not supported by many before Jan 2015 since that's when they released the GTX 960 series best ones i found for my card are 347.52 and they were the last set that said anything about any performance increase for Far Cry 4
i will also add that i seem to get crashes in other games (the witcher 3) as well with most of the newer drivers Nvidia has released for Windows 10 and much worse performance ( i use windows 10 Pro 64 bit)
so when i wanna play that game i revert back to 347.52 and get no crashes (have to use win 8.1 64 bit drivers should not be an answer but it is the only thing i found to work with my Asus Strix gtx 960 )
Nvidia needs to get on the ball with the drivers and back to adding performance and stability , rather then keep changing the drivers for a new game that screw up previous games that use Nvidia gameworks settings
i am using Nvidia Fur (i love the Fur Effect with 60 fps in 1080p and it's so much better than the normal Fur Effect), Enhanced Godrays (Volumetric Fog looks a lot better for Fog, but the Godrays, specially in Shangri La are so great) and HBAO+ (makes the game look more comic like and i like that, SSBC is ok, too, but lacks that feeling that Disney movies give you lol).
I don't use PCSS because Ultra Shadows are just fine and i don't see a difference when playing and it takes away a lot of fps so the min fps dips under 60 fps.
I also don't use TXAA, because it simply makes it blurry all the time. I rather use SMAA because i have a sharp picture when not moving and a lot smoother picture when moving (Tree Leaves).
i could try turning it all off, but really ? i'm supposed to buy a 980 Ti to use gamework effects and then turn them all off the be able to play the game without crashes ?!?! so yes.. that's 400 Euro more for .. NOTHING.
like i said its most likely Nvidia Dropping the ball ..you've seen the posts on their forums and they go back months .. and Nvidia never even responded
so sadly yes all ya can do it play the game with the gameworks settings OFF or reduced until Nvidia even admits there is a problem and fixes the drivers
if your lucky enough to have an Older Nvidia card (like a 780) and you use the older Nvidia drivers the crashes are not as prevalent ..i get no crashes with the 347.52 driver ..but your 980 Ti card is not supported by those
oldest driver available for your card is 353.06 from May 2015
Yep Wid is correct here - it seems to be NVidia drivers that basically broke the Gameworks stuff. One guy in another thread said he has it nailed down to being just the god rays causing the issue which is really sad because they look great, but you can't play the game with a Maxwell gpu without the game crashing with those turned on. NVidia is really pissing me off these days, their QA is just awful. The lesson to take from this is never upgrade your hardware just for Gameworks specific settings. If you can run them great, but don't ever spend a penny on an upgrade just for those settings as they are usually terrible in terms of optimizations and half the time they're straight up broken.
