Hey Guys,I've began to work on a small project, in which I will be going through EVERYTHING (I can think of) related to map making on all of the Far Cry games. This will be a how-to handbook (will be posted on here when complete) which will go through each section of map making and will have links to a video tutorial for extra learning in each section. So To begin explaining what I will be doing, I will be targeting newbies wanting to gain quick experience at learning how to use the Far Cry Map Editor to it's full potential, to try and push for greater levels not only for you to explore but for the person making it to become proud of their creation from the time they publish their first Map.This guide, if done correctly will be used to try and draw more people into using the map editor properly and to try and cut out some of the blank maps with Pigs and Explosives everywhere. What will be inside the Handbook? So inside the handbook you will find 3 "chapters" first for Basics, 2nd for Intermediate and 3rd for Pro.Chapter 1:- Terrain Editing- Textures- Object Placement- Vegetation- AI Navigation Mesh / Placement- Validation- Sound Effects and Scene setting- Detailing your mapChapter 2:- Map Layouts (Explaining how to make a map the player will be able to walk around, not get lost or stuck and adding a focus point in the map where the player should reach)- AI Placement (Intermediate level: Explaining how to place AI so they spawn out of the view of the player, ETC)- Custom Building (From Various Different Objects)- Snap Tools (How to use it properly, explaining exactly what it's used for and when you'll need it)- Hole Tool (How to create a cave using intermediate tools on a basic level)- Water Leveling tool (How to create a waterfall using this tool to make it look more realistic and immersive)- Advanced help and tips from Chapter 1Chapter 3:- Custom Building (Advanced Level, creating Statues, Vehicles, and other things to add into your map)- Immersive Detail (How to make your map fit the scene perfectly and give a realistic feel to the player)- Finalizing your map (Constantly testing your map to make sure each time you play it, the results differ)- Hole Tool (How to expand the knowledge of this tool, by creating whole hidden worlds underneath the world you have just created)- Glitches (How to create Glitches such as the working Elevator and other awesome tricks that are used in escape maps)Final Comments:- Advice from other map makers- How to gather ideas for a map- Blank pages for Layout Design (and some Prefab Layouts for you to try out also)- Email address for any extra 1 on 1 advice and helpAnything I've missed let me know and I'll add it to this. I'm going to be making it simple to read and understand, and not go too much into detail. That's what all the video's are for. Thanks guys, let me know what you think of the idea of having a handbook on here. And if it's useful enough when finished I may contact Ubisoft about doing something similar to release with any of their future Far Cry games.
Yeah your right in thinking that, I want to go into it all in detail, but then cut back on some of the stuff to make it easier to understand, and quicker to learn, so in all honesty, I'm not 100% sure when the first one will be available, but the in-depth version will try to expand outside of Far Cry and explain different aspects of level design in a whole, but in my own take on it.Originally Posted by AKAFootloose Go to original post
Empty terrain maps are excellent, but there's also other ways of learning such as creating small tasks (challenges) in these terrain presets of which the player must figure out where the buildings were previously placed in that map, or even where they believe those buildings would work inside of it. This enhances the knowledge of layout and helps the player understand where things must go.
I want to add some challenges in this handbook which the player will be given a task of correcting a poor layout and things like that, so they are not only learning through knowledge, but that knowledge is also being put to the test on paper.
But I hope to have chapter one finished soon, no exact date because of the constant modifying I will be doing in terms of writing to get it right first time![]()
