Survival would be a neat aspect to improve upon. The game has a crafting system already for gear (ammo bags, holsters, etc) but I wonder if throwing in a crafting system for clothing would be possible as well.
With survival throwing in a weather system would be neat as well. Using blizzards to your advantage to attack a compound. But as your craft better clothing, you are able to fight the cold better (like malaria). Constantly having to replenish your heat would make a fire important. Harvesting a bush provides you with sticks to make said fire and basic shelter to keep warm at night. A fire would also keep animals away.
I was thinking how to make survival part of the game, but not so important that you can't even focus on the story, and after watching some Survivorman, he is always worrying about his energy levels. He goes days without eating and feels sluggish, his dreams are real out of whack, etc.
Going too long without eating in game would result in the Sprint bar capacity slowly getting lower and lower as your energy levels deplete, soon you will only sprint for half as long or not at all. If gone unchecked long enough I see the character maybe not dying, but passing out. As Les mentioned his dreams were really crazy. If you pass out, it starts a mini-game, in the form of a hallucination/dream with lots of crazy things and if you survive the dream you wake up!
Focusing on the cold or hunger, along with survival skills and crafting, while going through the game (similar to malaria in Far Cry 2) would add that sense of survival, without turning the game into Minecraft, etc having to craft a workbench, tools, build a base etc. and just getting too complicated.
BRING BACK gun jams! They were very frustrating when you were in a pickle, but added that much more to the conflict. The animation now would be a lot better, but say the chance of a jam is 5%. Well shoot, I don't have enough money to buy ammo, oh hey they have discount ammo (old ammo, re loaded bullets, etc) I'll buy some of that. Well my chance of a jam just went up to 15%.

I also forgot to add that I think it would be a good idea to keep the rope climbing element. Maybe it could even be improved further.
I was thinking it would be cool to have a sling shot!! One of those ones that straps onto your arm. Could be used for headshot kills/knockouts, or if you aim at a specific spot, you can draw them to that area like the rock throw. I pelted a golden path member with a rock and they turned on me xD SO I thought it would be cool if it could be lethal as well as a stealth tool
