I don't normally get on forums but this game has got me interested enough to make a few suggestions because Ubi is definitely onto something with Wildlands. First off, I am an Army Aviator now and I also spent many years as a shooter. Yes, though I do and have done this stuff for a living I still love these kinds of games and try to find time to play them occasionally. I started playing Wildlands simply to spend time with my younger brother whom is also in the Army doing fun stuff as well. We are stationed across the country from one another and don't get to see one another often and this game also gives us an opportunity to "work" together in a way since we will not get that in the Army. I am not going to pick apart the game as I know there are many others more experienced with gaming that will find all the bugs and offer suggestions for those fixes but I do have one major suggestion that I believe will take this game to another level as well as one minor suggestion. Whether it is in the works or already mentioned I am not sure.
As a professional helicopter pilot I naturally gravitate towards flying helicopters in games like Battlefield or now Wildlands. I was very excited to hear my brother tell me about the game and I looked forward to him loading on the skid platform of a Littlebird and me taking him and a few other Army friends to an objective to infill and then orbit the objective providing close air support and then finally extracting them when the mission is complete. Needless to say I was disappointed when I tried to fly for the first time. I have gotten better but there is no real usable control of the helicopters in the game. Granted, it is a game and you cannot expect to control the helicopter with a cyclic, collective and pedals but you can very easily provide all of the pitch, roll, yaw and hovering capabilities of a helicopter. While a simplistic control scheme may benefit some I think that the majority of the gamer world is past having difficulties adapting to a control layout and learning how to do anything with a controller.
Without trying to compare Wildlands with Battlefield 4 the control setup in BF4 is a close as you can get to full functional control of the helicopter. Right stick controls pitch and roll while the left stick controls yaw and collective (power). This set up is also exactly like a R/C helicopter as well. I by no means am a developer and don't know what is entailed in this but simply adding the option for this control layout in the options menu would allow the end user to choose his/her poison. In addition to changing the controls, there should be an option to pilot first person as well since as it stands there is no real way at current to know where your rounds will impact without an aiming reticle nor is there any real pitch control to aim if there was. The reticle could be just like that of a gun in third person view. If first person view was added to the helicopters then on the small Littlebird type MD500s in the game a grease pencil mark on the inside of the windscreen would add a really nice touch as that is how it is often done in those helicopters. I truly believe that this change would be well received and first person on the ground vehicles would be an added bonus.
Finally, my last suggestion would be to add the option to buddy carry a fallen comrade. In real world combat, gaining overwhelming fire superiority is first and foremost when it comes to care under fire followed by getting that individual behind cover before it is safe to begin medical treatment. By adding the option of grabbing your buddy and either dragging or fireman carrying him to cover before providing aide would add an awesome bit of realism to the game. This could be accomplished by adding an extra prompt next to a fallen guy. Heal could still be chosen but next to it would be the drag/pickup prompt (like square) for example which would allow the player the choice of which would be better for the situation at hand.
Sorry for the long post but I hope the right people see this and others will agree with my suggestions. Thanks for the great games you guys create. They are great outlets for guys like me with stressful jobs.
