Random musings about the campaign/solo mode(s)

Hey people! Like a whole bunch of others out there I was really impressed by what For Honor is trying to deliver with its combat system. However, I'm not much of a multiplayer person myself, so what I'm mostly curious about are the singleplayer modes in the game. Now, I understand the dev team can't reveal an awful lot yet at this stage in the game's development, but seeing as I've heard the devs asking for feedback and such in several videos I figured I'd chime in with some thoughts I had.

As it stands, I could see the campaign handled in two different ways (or by alternating between both styles). The first would be more in line with what the multiplayer footage has shown us so far, which would be that your character is part of an army trying to complete certain objectives such as capturing strategic positions. That could still be pretty interesting in singleplayer if you go for a kind of Dynasty Warriors/Musou-esque approach where you have AI "officers" who pose a more serious threat to you than the average little soldier out on the field. In this case, those officers would serve as substitutes for real players.

Another direction I could see the singleplayer component go in would be more like your standard third person action game in the sense that you're on your own, going from A to B and eliminating enemies along the way. Alternatively, that could be its own thing (like a "Raid Mode") where you're storming the gates of an enemy fortress, outpost, village, etc. and the goal is to clear the settlement of enemies and eliminate its commander. You'd start off by hacking and slashing your way through lesser enemies, but as you venture deeper into the enemy castle or outpost you'd begin to encounter AI-controlled heroes you'd duel "properly" using the "art of battle" system. Then you'd be working your way up the chain of command till you end up facing the leader's personal guards and, ultimately, the commander himself. Defeating the commander in battle would end the stage. If "Raid Mode" was a separate thing I suppose you could randomize the location, enemy types (and sub-objectives?) to give it more replayability and all that. Kind of like a quick "dungeon run", so to speak.

Those are just some random ideas that popped into my head, though, so I don't know how they'd work out within the game's framework. That said, I really like the idea behind the game and it really does shine through that the creative director has been sitting on this idea for a very long time. You can tell pretty clearly that he's super happy to finally be able to talk about it and I hope that enthusiasm translates to the game itself. Looking forward to seeing more!

They could mix the single-player and multiplayer in a way that replaces the AI enemy commander and/or preceding captains with opposing players at the right moments.

In other words, the commander might be an AI character at the beginning of the match (1) to ensure the player time to fight his way through grunts and challenges without interference from the commander (2) and in case their are any bandwidth / server hiccups. Then, when the player crosses a threshhold (either a location or a tally of points from kills and objectives), that AI character could be replaced with a queued opposing player. The same could be done at multiple steps during the battle for minor "boss" characters.

What if the single player campaign was an open world mode like Skyrim.... taking place in-between the raging war of these three factions while having enemy groups of grunts and hero class npc's all across the land from all the different factions, as well as forts and strongholds of your faction to hold off against enemy hoards.

Endless side campaigns can consist of modes such as dominion, duels...etc, can be dispersed throughout all of the land in for honor; while of course you still have your main faction campaign missions that your players of each faction have. we know now that we have heard some news regarding For Honor's single player mode being a cinematic experience for players not motivated enough to do the multiplayer.... but I still can't help but think just how cool that would be

What about if in the campaign you could select a mode where you and your friends could go through the campaign together with more grunts and bosses/mini bosses or just a harder difficulty?
