In this post let’s talk a little bit about the upgrades and the purchasable stuff. Since you are a pirate and eventually you are attacking other ships and searching for gold and attacking and pillaging villages, you will get to a point of a rich man. So in this line of thoughts the game should have something attractive to spend all that treasures. In previous posts I was talking about upgrading your ship and your cabin inside the ship. This game mechanic should not end with the ship upgrades. I was talking also about the economic part of the game how you can purchase and manager different establishments and business like plantations, harbors, spending them on girls and in taverns and etc.

So what else should you be able to invest your money is not actually buying but purchasing to be build a mansion or a house or headquarter. In 1700 there wasn’t very much properties build in the Caribbean like it is in our days. So this will make the necessity for you to choose a place where you wish to live and then choose between different properties planes what to be build. This by itself should be a mini game or a quest for you to complete. It is not like purchasing something and that’s it. Let’s make the things a little bit more exciting like since you have chosen your future estate this will be the place where the game should begin. To complete the building process of the mansions or just a small house should not be an easy task. This project should require for you the following tasks to be completed:

    1) If it will be on a remote island you have to bring workers to build it.
    2) Get the required materials.
    3) Get the required financial for this task.

Those tasks to be completed will required to cruise with your ship in bigger Caribbean cities and search for those materials and bring them to the location which you will construct. So visiting the location from time to time you will be able to see the progress of the project.

Once you have completed the project the game should not end there. There are coming the upgrades which you can achieve, like build a garden, swimming pool, Turkish bath and etc. So after that the game should not end with this. You should be able to make things in this mansion like organizing fests with your crew, managing this property will required certain provisions from time to time and employs.

Let’s face it instead of creating some huge game world where you just can go and watch it is better to invest time and resources to create something smaller but with richer functions and interactions. This which you actually can do and after playing a while there will be still something to do inside the game. Running and Fighting is getting bored soon or later. What should be done is invest the hard work of Running and Fighting in something else. This way all that hard work on running will gave some reasonable sense to be done.

After that you might have want to build a ford, some more buildings bring people on your island and this way you will develop a whole island with its economy and etc. This will make you a governor of it. And of course if you get to such an experience than you will have a plenty of diplomatic missions and etc. connected with this island. This kind of missions are relaxing and fun, they are like the missions in GTA V where you have to operate an emergency vehicle truck and go and rescue broken cars from the streets of LA. All those details are making the game more interesting and extending the gameplay and it diversity. I think that is one side where the games should evolve.

However Uncharted 4 on e3 had a very nice atmosphere and graphic fidelity. If Caribbean world is recreated to some kind of this fidelity I think it will be a great result!, and of course to this Journey :-)

I agree with almost everything here. I made a couple of yelling at Ubi to make a Pirate game. Your thread of course is much more expansive.

Man, if I knew some high level programmers and some graphic artist, and had 10s of millions of dollars, Id start this up today.

A pirate franchise a la GTA could be worth billions in the long run.

    Hello everyone,
Since all the E3 press events has past I guess the most positive thing of it was that there is no more cross generation games anymore. Now is the time for the next gen and new games. Which of course is a very good news that will allow the creation of even more cinematic and immersive pirate’s game world. Seeing the tech demo of the Tomb Rider (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjV0KPeeS-E) character and face animation makes me think only one thing how successful an true pirate adventure might be achieved if Ubisoft decide to do it, or if they wait too long somebody else will I guess. The advancement of Motion Capture techniques will make the game cut scenes not only a scenes with some dialog which you don’t care but truly enjoying moment for you to follow the story line.

Talking about this subject makes me think that this game should have not just some cut scenes with character talking but a real gameplay system where you can choose what to answer and what to talk which of course will dictate the course of the events which will follow after the conversation is done. What I am talking about is a similar system like the Witcher 3 and Mass Effect, but here it should be even more advanced and easier. Instead of choosing of witty answers each answer should have the explanation of your intentions. For example if you want to beat the guy standing in from of you just choose this option and start the fight. If you want another way to deal the situation well choose are different option. It will be good if those options will have at least 3-4 different steps in impacting the story of the game. The choices which you make in the whole game will impact the end of it.

So since the market is dictated from making the games looking equality good on PC and consoles, we are in an almost equal moment of the games hardware on the market currently. (In 2-3 years the picture will not be the same than the PC again will prevail the consoles with a lot of power) Now imagine simulating a true hurricane experience in the sea with your ship this will looks like a hell to overcome or a ship battle where you can add from 512MB RAM to 8GB or RAM even much more horse power to all that naval battle experience. This advancement will bring even more objects in the game world, imagine when you capture a treasure ship entering the ship interior and seeing all the chests full of gold, which after that it is up to you how to divide the gold and for what. Implementing physically based rendering in this Caribbean world will make the graphics insane combined with a nice motion capture and facial expressions is something which I can only dream about it.

Most of the games now days looking the examples of the last E3 as well, are or Multiplayer or some kind of only run jump and smack the face of the enemy. There isn’t any more much logic in the games and strategy. The story line and doing something different than shooting and fighting in the game is also in the last priority of the game. So why GTA is successful? Well because it offers something more than just jump run and shoot. It offers the freedom of a sandbox game where you are choosing what to do. It contains this exploration element of a beautiful world, it contains a story which is well scripted and entertaining and of course it offers a lot of different game mechanics like driving anything you can imagine. All that can be achieved in a pirate game, as exploring the Caribbean tropical world, different cities in the Caribbean and settlements, having the option to acquire different ships and upgrade them, interaction with characters, romancing different characters in the game as a standalone missions or in brothel. Having different options to play the game as a merchant, pirate, governor, bandit, privateer, land owner and etc.

In the Fallout 4 presentation was presented something which I was talking about earlier in some of the previous posts which was the building element. Of course this line is a modern now to implement a small tower defense game in the big game. Which is the same game mechanic that is also in the Epic Fortnite. The conclusions is sooner or later if you don’t do it somebody else will do! Here in the pirate game at least this element is a little bit different not construction as you are involved as the worker but you are involved of the owner of the project where you only have to choose what to construct and to finance it. But the different constructions which you will do will have different game mechanics in the game, not only tower defense. The more interesting options which you give the player the more interesting the game will be.

For a successful pirate adventure sandbox game I have only one major recommendation for Ubisoft. And that is please do not make it like AC and FarCry recycling all the game mechanics and open world from those games to become a conveyor game which have to be release each year. A Fresh example of this is Far Cry 4, where 3 was a kick *** game then the 4th installment was nothing else just the same game different map and story. Think more open and creative like maybe more bioware style.

OK let’s dedicate this post a little bit about AI. This is some of the crucial parts of the innovation in video games where the industry should advance. Right now in most games the AI is just a basic repetitive option and once you pass by the first interaction with it, then it starts get repetitive. For Example the NPC’s in the games and the interaction with them is almost the same in every game. The only option which you are able to do with them is to punch them in the face. A deeper and more interesting interaction with the NPC’s should be implemented to make the exploration of the world more interesting.

So let’s say in most AC games when you get inside the city or anywhere you meet some NPC what are you options? The main NPC interactions are with the Merchant for example which is selling you good, or you can visit somebody who might give you a missions to complete and after that that’s it. Nothing else is happening in the game. With the random NPC’s you can’t do anything because they act like abnormal Zombies, which are just walking around and start running if somebody start shooting.

Probably in this case a more options to interact with them should be a good thing to be applied, like for example give the protagonist an options to interact with them to make them angry, or if you see somebody walking on the streets you can rob him, recruit him to your ship crew members. Or if you find some pirate from some gang band you can beat him. Which of course will trigger a consequence actions if his band members find you they will chase you and start beating you. Or the reverse is also possible, imagine you are walking in some of the colonial cities and then certainly you are getting attacked by robbers, or by mercenaries if you have higher wanted level. Just a random event in the game world. Or you are walking in the city and you are approached by a nice lady where you have the option to choose to go deeper in the conversation or to check out what she wants, or to start romancing her, which in some cases you might have luck in other she will call her husband who will not be so happy about your intentions.

Same rules are applying in the mode where you are cruising the oceans with your ship. The main character should have option to interact with his crew mates on the same ship while in the ocean. Invite them to smoke a pipe or do some random jobs on the ship like cleaning the main deck and etc. challenging them in different competitions which will increase the moral about you in the crew members and will make your position as captain taking less danger to be replaced by a competitor pirate.

Other subject which I would like to stress about is the 1000 chests and notes and etc. in the game which are marked on your map and you have to find them. This game mechanic should be erased from the Ubisoft games completely and be transformed to something more intelligent. Visiting a certain location will contains a various chests which you are able to loot. Instead of losing the time of the gamer in the same repetitive chests finding make it more immersive, like different location missions. For example kill the pirates which are making troubles on the current island, go there find their settlement and resolve the situation which will occur to find there varicose chests and have the option to loot them. And not all the missions or the location should be related to exterminating somebody, there might be some other options like reach the location by passing in hard terrain mode like in the Indiana Jones journey type style falling rocks and etc. Just have 40 locations on which you are facing different challenges to resolve instead of 1000 chests to loot and each chest is the same repetitive game play mechanic. I know this is hard to achieve when you want to release each year AC GAME, but quality matters more than quantity. Also make the chests full with different items not only money which items you are able to utilize them or sell them. Same is for looting the enemy body’s.

Another thing which is important and which is not in the best possible way made by ubisoft is the inventory section. The weapons system and the character customization all that have to be rebuild from scratch and allow the player to have richer deeper and more entertaining objects and stuff to collect and interact in the game. Option to collect many objects which will allow the character different customization, collect different keys which will open different doors that will take you to exciting journeys. This inventory should contains not only your own inventory but the inventory of the whole ship, or ships warehouses which you might have. As well this inventory should control your crew and ship ammunition's, armors, weapons, stocks and etc. Have the option to customize your key crew members with better outfits and weapons and tools so they will do a better job on the game. Make your crew members better prepared for battle while supplying them with the necessary weapons, Manage all the tools and materials required for ship upgrades or building upgrades.

New day new pirate post is coming today. This one is inspired by the statement of Todd Howard saying the following: Todd Howard: That’s what we try to create, that sense of going anywhere and doing anything. GTA V does it so well. It puts you in its world and it makes you its director. It says yes to the player a lot.

This is what the Ubisoft Pirate game should be. Give the freedom of the player by the way this was stated in one Kotaku article just take out the AC stuff and leave us explore. And so how do we explore? Well if you wish to be merchant be merchant have a fleet and make a trading empire, if you wish to be pirate or bandit be pirate go and do pirate stuff, which will increase the bounty for your head. Than when you visit locations you will see poster with award for your hear. If you wish to build and create, than be Governor. The player should have the freedom to feel inside his play world. A good character customization will be a good feature, not only by weapons but with clothes, overall look, hair, tattoos, and etc. I wish to state one more comment the forts in the Black flag was awesome but almost all the same, especially when you enter in the final boss room, you kill the boss and that’s it. No future exploration of the fort, the same boss in each ford, the same ending. Instead of creating 20 forts create 5 forts each unique way to approach it, unique boss, unique exploration and experience.
