Lifts, random bouncy bridges and planks are all stupid gimmicks that add nothing but randomness and frustration to a precision skillgame. Instead of focusing on these awful gimmicks, RedLynx should stick with what worked in Trials Evo - thankfully most of the tracks do follow this example. I think we need more tracks like "Way of the ninja", that was an awesome track.
I do hate the true random ones (Waterwheel I am looking at you!) where it's more about luck than skil but fortunately there aren't many of those so I can't complain. In almost every instance the bouncy bridge or whatever delaying factor they add is a clue that there is a timesaver you can do to avoid it; once I started looking at it that way most tracks became much cleaner. Oddly enough, I have come to enjoy Trebuchet though, where I feel I now have a good handle on using the sling for speed/distance and it seems like using the bouncy bridge properly usually gives me a more consistent run too...
I hate the tracks where the course goes up and down and you constantly have to lean and the ones where the finish is on the other side of the map and you have to use the gas to get there.
Exactly, for example Trebuchet and some of the tier 3 tracks (ones with moving cart, a grabber and other BS). Just not funOriginally Posted by iviarkD Go to original post
Are you referring to desert gondola? I don't mind that one actually. The trebuchet itself is something you can learn pretty well, but I'm not a fan of wobbly bridge jumps on Trebuchet and some other maps. The grabber definitely sucks because it tends to cause me to crash, but go watch GTDave's run on the Watchers and you will see how you can skip it entirely and go faster. I just improved my score by 50 spots by doing a very poor replica attempt at the skip and I will never ride that stupid claw again if I can avoid it.Originally Posted by crazy_mike_8 Go to original post
Edit: Worst gimmick for me is the falling rocks at the beginning of delivery line
Yes, thats what I was saying too; if there is a way to skip one of these dumb physics objects, I wont hold it against the track. I suppose somebody will say that having to stop long enough to set yourself up to do that skip "ruins the drive line", etc.... but I dont really care much about that stuff. There are plenty of "pure" tracks for folks who live for that stuff. The only time the physics gimmicks really gets me down is when my skill is tossed out the window and I have to trust too much on luck. I dont mind making 100 runs to shave off some milliseconds... but I really do mind making 100 great runs that all turn to cr*p because I didnt catch the perfect lucky bounces off the WaterWheels two physics objects that shaves 5+ seconds off your time.Originally Posted by weee99 Go to original post
Again I have to point to GTDave's run on the watchers, he found a way to make what seems like a very disruptive line into a fairly smooth driveline. There really is an art to those lines that people are figuring out and it is very skillful.Originally Posted by xitooner Go to original post
I think I'm more willing to tolerate the learning curve on rigid physics objects than wobbly ones. For example, on casino rooftops the first jump I feel like eventually I can become consistent. On the other hand for balance avenue or the grindhouse where there is an object suspended by a wobbly rope, I may never get consistent enough to satisfy me.
Edit: Wow I improved my technique on the watchers enough that I shaved over a second off my time before this post made me think to re-do it and I'm just outside the top 50. I should stop by the timesavers thread.
You can use my ghost on Watchers if you can't keep up with Dave, I think he has me by about 2-3 seconds. It's a really nice shortcut to skip that grabby claw.Originally Posted by crazy_mike_8 Go to original post
I hated the suspension bridges at first. Now they are a minor annoyance. They aren't solid, but they are at least consistent-ish. I don't get them perfect as reliably as solid obstacles, but I feel like I can develop enough skill to be lucky on them most of the time.
Waterwheel, on the other hand, is no fun at all.
I hate the hanging logs, like one in Grindhouse... It's just impossible to pass it with decent success rate...
the jumpy bridges are quite ok.
but the elevators drive me nuts, specially the ones you have to hit correctly and lift frontwheel to bounce off without stopping...
