Not working for me on iOS.
I restarted and there were no yeti and checkpoints didn't give me furs, but last one did it instead. Weird!

Worked for me on Android, just unlocked the "helmet" to finish the outfit.

@eli: you don't just restart. You need to race someone off the leaderboard.

Okay, so if you hold the "last checkpoint" button to start the track back to the beginning because you wiped out or missed a checkpoint to the ghost while doing this trick you stop getting yeti furs.

I think I realized why I was getting mixed results. When selecting someone from the leaderboard, there is a button that says "race ghost", and another button that's just for restarting the race without racing the ghost you've selected. Today I made sure to click "race ghost" and it worked for me every time.

After spinning the loot wheel, simply press the "Leaderboards" button directly below the loot wheel. Choose someone to beat and press the "Race Ghost" button to begin.

Okay, so if you keep racing the same ghost to do this you do eventually stop getting Yeti Furs. Tried to race someone who's time was over 4 minutes and after a few times I stopped getting the furs. Good to know.

I did this trick to earn more furs a couple of days ago, but now it's not working for me
I haven't even unlocked the first suit. i have like 115/400....

I'm on android btw.
