It's been discovered by smarnyan on here, but it's posted deep in the update thread, so I thought I'll put it out here as well.
If you've updated the game to FROSTOPOCOLYPSE, and your game goes to black screen after 'ubi'->'redlynx'->'TRIALS FRONTIER' screens, here's your solution
right after 'TRIALS FRONTIER' screen, press 'home' button of your iOS device (round one) going back to your home screen. Then just go into TF app again by clicking the icon. That's it, issue fixed

I also had the same problem tried pressing Home button then Trial App still the same problem. So here's what i did on my iOS, Deleted the App and reinstall the game again but 1st played the game offline till bike upgrade option is available in the game quit and restart the Game/iPad and play the game again in offline to see everything working fine then click on U Connect enter your userid and password click close and you will get the option to download from the Uplay Server select that option and complete the entire downloading process till 100% and every thing will be same you will be able to send/receive Gifts, Connect to Bunker etc.. Hope my solution will help those facing problem.

I also did it the way imrellik says and everything works ok now. The few minutes back at level 1 waiting for the option to bring back your old save are terrifying though...

For me killing the application forcibly (by double clicking the round button quickly and swiping the game away) was necessary in order to reset the cache. But I guess reinstalling works too, I was too do that due past bugs.
Cache can be also cleared out at iOS settings for the game, I have no idea what that will do, but it may be solution to many different problems that has arisen now (as the caching system apparently seems to be different now).
And, thanks bunnyhop90- for crediting me ^^
EDIT: apparently it was Android that has the long-press tasklist, and iOS has double tap...

I don't see this bug listed as one of the "Frostpocolyse" bug fixes; seems to me you are risking a lot by reinstalling these days. I would not reccommend that approach to solve anythign unless a Dev tells us it's okay. . . Just saying....

I just did the uninstall/install on iOS and it worked. I did how ever have the game all ready installed on my wife's iPad. So I got my game save up to date on hers without the update, then on mine uninstall and installed it and was successful in getting my progress back. Now if only that would fix the gift box issue on Android.
