100% agree. I played FC2 as you did but the trend now seems toward hand-holding games with frequent instructions on what to do. Not only that but everything is marked on the map so you don't have to do much thinking. I re-installed FC4 yesterday but played for no more than 5 minutes and then uninstalled it. Looks like a return to FC1 and 2 for me soon. I'm hoping Just Cause 3 will be worth having and is a tough challenge as well as being riotous fun. As for any FC5, I fear it will be more of the 3 & 4 simplicity with the artificial difficulty of angry animals populating the game to ridiculous levels and stuff you can pick up for free all over the place with no problem whatsoever.Originally Posted by Martythemerc Go to original post
The way I make some games interesting is to impose certain restrictions on what I can collect, how much loot I'm allowed to accumulate and what weapons I'm restricted to. So played, games then become a proper challenge.
Your last statement about restricting yourself is exactly what i am talking about. This games are designed to give us more choice. For example. I have only just completed fc4 the first time, and plan at some point to play again in "Rambo" mode. That is to say, bow and arrow and throwing knives for combat..... i realise i will have to use c4 and mines et.c for certain things but otherwise i think this game would be fun in a kind of "sticks n stones" modeOriginally Posted by wassupwiyou Go to original post
Well, I was almost ready to give Ziggy's mod a try, but after watching several playthroughs while using it, i bums me out that the mini-map is still there (but at a less objectionable opacity level), and the enemies outlines are still visible behind rocks, walls, etc...
Obviously its an improvement, but not at all acceptable.
I also understand Markaccus's point, by this time there are so many expecting a super easy challenge free game (with side quests galore), that there would be a huge outcry if these built-in cheats and fluff were removed outright. But again, the problem isn't one of just having this junk, it's having the game designed with the intent of it being there.
So what? Well, it's pretty obvious Ubi has generic issues with keeping the gameplay/rewards balanced, and I fear a game designed to work with huds and other screen clutter will be less than optimized when a serious gamer turns it off. The only way to insure this doesn't happen is to design it assuming none of the junk is enabled, then put the stuff in there for those who need crutches.
Sadly, we ended up with FC3 and FC4's challenge-free gaming because Ubi was only listening to "the surface" of the complaints.
For example, people didn't realize that the small size of the map basically required respawning outposts in order to keep the action at a reasonable level. So when they complained, all Ubi heard was "respawning outposts", not the underlying messages of "put it on a random timer", make it less predictable than simply letting the outpost out of sight for a few moments", etc...
So, they let the posts stay "dead" in FC3, then Ubi was overwhelmed with requests to let them repopulate because people finally figured out A). It gets boring quick, B). Any outpost in the real world is an outpost for a reason, so it WILL be fought over. In other words, Ubi overreacted, heard a complaint, "fixed it" then had to put it back..I wonder if the totality of the message sunk in?
Same could be said for malaria, I personally thought it was a nice touch, I feel all games should have some element of "character maintenence", people eat, get thirsty, need sleep, and more, and a creative designer could use these to great effect to enhance the realism. Of course those searching for easy shoot-em-up style gameplay might get their panties in a wad if the game suggests they find a safehouse for a nap (that takes 10 extra seconds in game for the actual nap even if it's a full night's sleep).
Before it get's lost in the shuffle, let me restate how terribly happy I was that there were ZERO monsters or sci-fi elements in FC2. In FC3 it was brough back to some degree (along with drugs for some reason), and now in FC4 we have the trippy Shangri-La stuff, and of course the two demented freaks Yogi and Reggie. Why? What is the fascination with the fantasy stuff, and drugs? I liked burning the drug fields but found it interesting that it was pot and not something more sinister like opium poppies. Anyway, let this serve as my vote to drop all pretense for science fiction, and if you are going to play around in the area of drugs, try not to glorify it in any way, and make the drugs you are destroying universally understood to be a horrible destroyer of humanity. How about a mission to destroy a Krokodil production facility? Who wouldn't be up for that?
I've done it several times, no biggie.Originally Posted by Markaccus Go to original post![]()
I've taken maybe 10 rhinos with the recurve (or hunter's bow), but it sort of made me mad. My goal of course was to get the "clean kill double skin" deal, but maybe 50% of the time I only ended up with one skin.
Now I can't be sure if the rhino was shot at by somebody else when it inevitably ran off, all I know is I stuck them with enough arrows to bring them down but only doulble skinned part of the time.
Once, in order to research what was going on, I made certain each was a headshot, and that time I surely did get a double. Other times they'd be pincushioned from all angles, so maybe that's why I was denied the doubles?
Clearly you did not try Ziggy's hardcore version of the mod. Like other mods, he has a casual, normal and hardcore release. In hardcore, no mini-map (just a compass), and no wall hacking. whatsoever.Originally Posted by Far_Cry2_Fan Go to original post
If a true fan of how FC2 is structured, then you're missing quite a bit in the way of gaming experience by skipping Ziggy's FC3 hardcore mod. It's basically as close as you're going to get to a more balanced, challenging game, whichever play style you prefer.
