Oh, hello! I am new around here, but hopefully you will be hearing from me a lot more. I've recently taken up a personal project thanks to the amazing IGE Ubisoft has provided us with, alongside the best Far Cry installment to date. There are just so many options that the creative potential for user made content is astronomical. Unfortunately, even the best designers can be stumped and I have found myself at a loss for ideas. So here I am, hoping that this community of skilled map makers can give me some advice so I can get another step closer to publishing and sharing my creation with the rest of you.
I am working on an Outpost. The best way to describe it is as a maximum security prison island in the middle of a caldera. Dubbed "The Boiling Rock" by its occupants, this island fortress features a set of docks that sits at the base of a 100 ft. cliff face leading up to the prison walls. Once past the main gate, you find yourself in the uppermost "ring" of the island, with a second ring inside the outer and a large prison camp deep in the center. Other features of note include two main guard outposts on either side of the the upper ring, four guarded checkpoints (two on each ring), a secret cave entrance in the center pit and a starting zone for the players at the top of the caldera that surrounds the main island.
So here's my dilema: I have no idea where to begin setting up a prisoner camp. I am paralyzed by indecision, and I need some pointers on how I should go about setting it up. What type of buildings should I use? I've messed around with ruins, huts, tents, and random shacks but nothing felt right. I need to get this thing blocked out before I can move on to adding more polish to the rest of the map and start adding AI. Like I described above, the actual prison camp sits in the middle and is surrounded by two elevated rings that are heavily fortified and guarded. I have used just over 55% of my available objects, roughly 30% of memory and performance is still in the green.
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated
Hey! If ruins, huts, and tents don't work, do a mix of all three. What I mean is instead of placing default buildings, combine different pieces together to create one building. Build the guard outpost out of a set of walls and pillars, instead of using one object for example. However, by doing this, the object limit will skyrocket, but in my opinion quality over quantity. Keep in mind, that ALWAYS sticking to your main layout is not always the best thing to do, sometimes improvising is needed obviously. Also it would help if a screenshot was provided for proper input, I am sort of just reading your mind right now. ;P
EDIT: Also, if you already have built custom buildings, ignore everything I said because it is irrelevant
Thank you for the suggestion! I will try making some custom buildings out of those tile sets and see what I come up with. I may just have to scale back my original plans for the prisoner camp and go with something more simplified. The good news is that I don't think I've made any custom buildings as you describe them, mostly just standard stuff to block out the main guard posts and barracks. My only concern is having enough objects available to go back over everything and add finer details to the interiors, docks, and also weapon caches for the players to find.
I don't have any videos or screens of my map yet, but I will try to post some either later today or tomorrow (pretty busy at work this weekend). I tried to describe it as best as I could but I imagine you all would probably be able to help me more of you could see exactly what I'm working with.
what would be the best way to get a screen shot or video on here? I don't have a PC so anything I do online is through my Xbox or my iPhone.
