Developer suggestion from experienced pc user

First of all, I would like to say the Far Cry ports to PC are some of the best game ports in the gaming industry. However, I would like to make a suggestion. Please don't force PC players to use the user interface devices intended for the console, like the weapon wheel. On the PC it usually means trying to span two or three keys at once, while holding the mouse in a tight position to select the correct weapon and make a selection like flame or explosive arrows. This can be very difficult in the middle of a fire fight. There are plenty of keys on the PC, just select a key for those options please. That is the biggest failure on your port of FC4, forcing the use of the weapon wheel for selections like sticky bombs, and specialty arrows.

Much of my background has involved computer program development. Usually as a user interface designer or lead engineer. So I come with some understanding of the field. Also I am old enough to have watched the personal PC develop from the very beginining. Yeah, I'm an old fogey. But I still LOVE gaming! So I do have the background to make useful suggestions.

Also, please remember and honor, that the gaming industry would not exist were it not for the PC and the games initially developed for it alone. But, like I said, Ubi had done a great job porting the Far Cry series to the PC. Keep up the good work! This instance though could be the beginning of an unfortunate trend of forcing console interface items on PC users where they don't work well. I have quit playing more games for this reason than any other.

Again, thank you for your good work and for considering this post.

    Regards,

Absolutely agreeing with you about the explosive & fire arrows . As you said we pc gamers got plenty of keys and its just laziness from ubisoft to don´t make key bindings for the fire and explosive arrow to pc gamers . I realy wish´d that i could make a key binding for each of them , hell even in far cry 3 it was possible .

Yes, in FC3 it was possible to key bind all the functions. Guess that is why the weapon wheel being forced on the PC users was such a surprise for me. Just don't see any good reason for it.

The reason is called laziness , simple as that .

I'd rather say all Ubisoft games after 2008 (Far Cry 2 is the last non-screwed Ubisoft game on PC that I can recall. And that's probably only because it was supposed to be a PC-exclusive at first.) are some of the least optimized and most broken in the industry.

And funnily enough, PC, for a reason or another, is starting to surpass the sales of console games once again. The thing the developers need to do is to scrap platform parity, you know how pissed people on the PC are when our 5+ teraflop GPUs and hell-of-a-lot more powerful CPUs get screwed by bad optimization, low effort and removal of features that were there in the trailers and worked well? That is what hurts the sales, people just don't like being screwed.

Now, The Division has already been confirmed to screw it up.

Up your game, Ubisoft, you can't aim for platform-parity and "getting everything out of all platforms" at once, because everybody knows platform-parity (Some screwed up sense of marketing), is bad.

We put out the cash for a PC because we WANT the PERFORMANCE. We also want the keyboard or keypad in my case, and the mouse. It is both the fastest, and at the same time, the most accurate game controller there is.

I drank that Kool-Aid when it was first said that 2014 would be the year PC sales would eclipse console sales, then I found out what the reality is.

More specifically it has zero to do with AAA multi platform games unfortunately. It's primarily due to the new trend of tons of startup indie dev teams using PC as their developing platform of choice.

Another way of putting it is number of units sold vs gross sales dollars are two different things entirely, esp if they are cheaply priced games new devs are trying to make a name for themselves with. I don't mean to belittle them, but that is the reality.

So at the end of the day, while it may some day have an impact on mainstream titles as well, it seems for some time we might be stuck in this AAA multi plat limbo of consoles getting 80% or more of the sales, and the PC versions being relegated to quickly ported rush jobs by the least paid, least competent of their teams.
