I'd prefer they drop the weapon class damages, and add a mix of general traits a la Sharpshooter. I feel less obligated to run with a Rifle, due to the increased headshot damage, reload speed, and...
Its easier to determine the buff/nerf directionality an entire weapon category should go for overall viability, if the weapons within it have a balanced scale of internal viability.
If you already picked up the "best" weapon, why pick up any other weapon afterwards? Once you have the "best", there is nothing "better" after all. Loot isn't loot if you stop picking it up.

I'd imagine it has more to do with the fact that they drastically outperform all other rifles for both burst and sustained damage.
What I noticed during the Public Beta: The Survivalist had Fragmentation grenades, and Demolitionist had Incendiary.
I don't know if it was a bug or not...but if it wasn't, other features might...
