So many OK tracks ruined by hill climb of stairs. Stop it!
I agree, a way to fix this is putting custom collisions on the stairs' surface or putting a plank on it.
i don't exactly mind them, its when they are made steep, that's when they start to bug, i agree though, a custom collision or some sort of surface to level it out and make it a little smoother
I think it all depends in the context how the object is used, as far as log piles/barrels/stairs etc go, if they have a decent approach or jump before it they become much easier to pass.
Putting a vertical wall behind such slow speed obstacles is just making it worse tho. And don't get me started on micro donkey stairs cause of the tiny wheels http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif
Short stairs can be passed with the 250/450 with some approach momentum, however if it's a slow start and they are longer, they just get annoying as your wheels start bumping into them.
I try to limit stairs by putting planks on it or make a ramp/rail on the drive line itself with the stairs still visually there as a decoration.
Metal stairs ( I think they are called fire escape ) have railings at the sides of them, and concrete stairs can still be visually ok with a sloped concrete ramp or railing.
Stairs are good as long as you make sure the player is aware of the exact shape they're gonna be driving on. So if the stairs are just gonna be a ramp on a medium track then instead of only a custom collision cover the stairs with planks or something to clearly indicate it's a high speed ramp. If it's a harder track and the stairs are meant to be climbed one step at a time then it's different.
I think it's not too bad if you're able to clear the stairs in a single jump on a harder track and they're there as a kind of punishment for not hitting right. I also don't mind when they're covered with a plank for example to make the riding surface smoother.
On the other hand stairs just placed in the middle of a drive line with no thought other than to piss people off is just sloppy and lazy and usually the sign of a ****ty track in the first place and belongs in the same category of tracks that use cars and logs in the same way.
I had two sets of stairs in a track I made, but laid a plank that wasn't long enough to cover the whole lot, but you could get enough momentum to hop over the three or four exposed steps.
I too find stairs a chore to climb and when they are just slapped in the middle of a high speed section they become infuriating....
Same goes for cars. The positioning of them is everything and if required a small plank or something to climb up them with is beneficial to the flow of the track.
As long as I don't have to drive on the stairs or if there is a way to skip them I am ok with them. You know what's not a useable obstacle, explosives in the driveline!
