Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
Hello there everyone.
For the past 3 weeks I have had this installation error when I try to launch Trials for the first time in Steam. It goes through the first time set-up momentarily, before an error message shows up saying Failed to Start (Unknown error).
I have tried many different solutions to solve this problem including basic things like verifying the game cache, reinstalling completely and installing components separately (vcredist, uplay, directX and msu), deleting appcache folder in Steam folder, to strenuous things such as completely uninstalling Steam, except for the SteamApps folder, from my system and restarting the computer with no background programs or applications running.
My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) so yes I do have service pack 2 so that is not the issue here nor is any form of an Anti-Virus program the issue.
Worth noting also that when I try to run the executable file Trials.FMX an error message appears saying "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."
Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you need more info just ask. Thanks http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif

Re: Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
I've already tried installing the C++ re-distributable package as an admin and no luck there unfortunately. Thanks for the input though http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif
Re: Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
Greetings,
Do you have the 32bit or 64bit OS installed?
If the 64bit version then you may want to try installing the 64bit C++ runtimes for that version as well as the 32 bit versions:
32 Bit Version: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/downl...s.aspx?id=5555
64 Bit Version: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/downl....aspx?id=14632
Re: Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
32 bit and yeah I already tried installing that but I apparently have a newer version installed. Not sure if I'm supposed to have a newer version though.. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...n/confused.gif
Re: Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
This is potentially harmful to your system if done wrong, but this may help:
Quote:
This issue is caused by a conflict with some of the files in the 2008 version of the C run-time libraries. These libraries are part of the Visual Studio 2008 release, the version numbers start with 9.0. These libraries may be installed with several different Microsoft and third party products.
Resolution
The steps below resolve the issue by setting the default version of the C run-time libraries to the highest version number you have installed on your computer. To set the default version, you will need to modify the registry.
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
Windows Vista
1. To open the Registry Editor, click the Start button and type “regedit.exe” (without the quotation marks) and press the ENTER key. If you see the User Account Control dialog box appear, click Continue.
2. On the left side, expand the tree structure until you find the registry key that starts with "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\Winners\x86_policy. 9.0.microsoft.vc90.crt_".
3. Expand the key above.
4. Below that key, you should see a 9.0 key. Select the 9.0 registry key.
5. In the right pane, make note of the number you see in the Data column for the row where the Name is set to (Default), in case you need to revert to this number later.
6. Look through the list of numbers in the Name column and find the highest number.
7. Double-click the (Default) string value to open the Edit String dialog box.
8. Replace the number in the "Value data" box with the highest number you saw in step #6. Click OK.
9. On the File menu, click Exit to close the Registry Editor.
10. After completing step #8 the issue may be resolved. If you continue to see the same problem restart the computer.
Re: Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
Greetings,
Well after a little digging, and not doing what I'm paid to do ... Work http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon/wink.gif , I found the following:
The above taken from here:

Try installing the 2008 versions, if you already have the 2010 version installed.
Re: Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
Inquisitor do you mind posting where you found the quote? I just want to be sure that the issue is completely related before mucking around with regedit again.
UseLessUK, just tried installing the 2008 re distributable package x86 for SP1 and still no luck. Do you know if there was a 2008 one for SP2 which I may not have installed yet?

It was from a microsoft support thread. It basically said that your system may have the incorrect runtime package set as the default for your system, therefore programs are having issues starting. Now, it was not directly about Trials, but I assume this may be the problem you are having. I'll see if I can find the thread again
Re: Failed To Start (Unknown Error)
Thanks. I just don't want to risk anything for something too irrelevant especially when I do not have my own computer to play it http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...n/confused.gif
