Next Xbox to require a constant Internet connection?

Have a read of the full article, some quotes below:
"Unless something has changed recently," one of the sources told us over email, "Durango consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used."
...
"If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started," the source continued. "If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."
...
"Every Durango console ships with a Kinect sensor. A Kinect sensor must be attached and configured for the console to function."
...
"Every person we've talked to about the always-online connection, internally and externally, has been incredulous. They predict a fiasco. They detect hubris in a Microsoft riding high off of the Xbox 360's incredible post-Kinect sales performance. But they also detect, as I have, an intensified interest in Microsoft's part to position the next Xbox as an entertainment device, to not emphasize games as significantly as they had with past Microsoft consoles. Add that to far shakier rumors of the next Xbox working as a cable box or DVR or some other TV-viewing enabler--something not a single source of mine could confirm--and you might wonder: if my cable box always has to be connected, why not my next Xbox?"
Re: Next Xbox to require a constant Internet connection?
Tbh im not really bothered by this at all as ive already decided that i wont be buying another M$ console after i found that i could not play some of the Arcade games "offline" on the 360 as it couldn't confirm i owned the game without checking online 1st (SWOS n Track n Field, even tho the games are ancient and referring to my 2nd hand game post, its doubtful that M$ payed those original devs (Sensible Software) any money to use the games on Arcade - they just bought the licenses from whichever current game company owns them (Codemasters))
Personally im hoping that one of the big 2 does flop, they've had there time on delivering quality gaming systems (original Xbox & Ps/Ps2) and now its back to the usual corporate poop of trying to rinse the consumer out of a lot of cash with crappy built systems. In doing so tho, history tells us that normally when this happens another console, breaks out on to the market and these firms tend to offer what the "giants" dont/wont anymore .... OUYA & Steam-box come to mind (these peeps wouldn't have bothered piling a lot of cash into things if there wasn't a gap appearing in the market, n that gap had to appear a few years ago as these things take time to develop)
The PS4 & 720 wont sell big time, the only peeps that`ll buy that straight away will be hardcore gamers & mums n dads who have got naggy kids n just want them to be quiet http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon/shhh.gif
Re: Next Xbox to require a constant Internet connection?
http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...s/icon_lol.gif I am praying they release a "always on" next box, and then it bombs.
Give console market dominance back to the Japanese, it's for the best.

Hardcore gamers? It's a Broad-ish term. The hardcore gamers I know are not considered a demographic anymore by the mainstream market it sometimes seems. But I can picture the kind of hardcore gamer that you mean.
Re: Next Xbox to require a constant Internet connection?
Microsoft will have to regain my trust next gen before I'll consider buying their console. I don't like the direction they've taken with their Metro interface, Kinect, Xbox Indie Games, and this always-online stuff. I'll be playing games on my PC next gen, and I'll probably eventually pick up a PS4 and Wii U when they start releasing some good exclusive titles.
Re: Next Xbox to require a constant Internet connection?
i dont know how to take this really....it comes across as utter shyte tbh. this cant be ok for them to do surely???

This is the part that has me worried the most. I thought for sure this was just going to be a rumor, but they pretty much confirmed it this time.
By "configured" do they mean "able to detect a video and audio of a person in the room"? From the sound of it, I don't think there's any way in hell I'd ever put one of these in my house.
How much of that Kinect data gets transmitted to Microsoft's servers? They're going to have to be 100% transparent about the intent and capabilities of this device if they want to avoid a class-action lawsuit.
Re: Next Xbox to require a constant Internet connection?
i hear you..its like we are being forced to do something, which innturn costs us more money...pffft

I consider the feature an invasion of privacy. I have the current kinect and I regret the purchase. It is disabled in the settings and I have it turned around. Once my kids were playing kinectimals and I was eating doritos in the background. For a few days after that my homepage was displaying doritos and lays adds. Coincidense? Probably. It still creeped me out.
Any system that forces a camera to be used is not going to be used in my home. I prefer the controller. Hell, my 4 and 6 year old kids prefer a controller and dont really like kinect.

jook ,you said this perfectly..im the same..bought the kinect bundle..played table tennis etc for a month (nearly killed me), but the novelty wore of..and this is exactly wot you said about the privacy invasion..thats how i feel...me n the missus were just on about it...
Re: Next Xbox to require a constant Internet connection?
Yep, all these sources saying this stuff tells me not to buy the next Xbox. I fully agree with Jook, tho, I am not putting a Kinect sensor always on in my house, nor am I letting Microsoft force their products and business plans on me.
As far as next-gen goes, I'm getting a PS4 before I buy an Xbox, if ever. Not unless something changes.
