Added as a collaborator. You should receive an email. I know your brain is spilling over with Evo knowledge http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/think.gif

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Thank God, I just tried to bump another thread concerning this idea in hopes of getting some progress towards a system that we all can join in on.
Great job 'aWebDesigner', Imo I think we all need someone to get this idea off the ground like you have started, and the rest will follow. I can see this working it's way into being a big part of the forums/track editor.
Very excited! =)

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Just a small note on the Rotate with OPE tut, if the curve data source starts at 0, it should end at 359. Ending at 360 causes the object to pause briefly as it spends 2 consecutive ticks in the same position.

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I've got one done, but not sure how to share it yet....
edit: does....THIS work? https://docs.google.com/drawings/pub...&w=1201&h=1203

Thanks for doing that stuff guys, my knowledge of anything physics related is more than limited at the moment, perhaps your work helps http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I'm trying to start with things that might not be obvious to some people, but can be extremely useful. Next one will be a modulo switch. After that I'm not sure. Hey A Web Designer, you need to show me how you share these correctly.
-
Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
This is a really good idea, it's definitely something that I would find useful and I already have with the OPE tutorial so thank you for that. I am looking forward to more tutorials.

I've been looking for that thread for a while now but couldn't find it, was also wondering if there were any updates on it but obviously not.
-
Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Yeah, I would really appreciate more of these http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on/biggrin.gif
Brilliant idea!

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Nice idea mate. You should check skysaw's thread out too and see if someof the peolpe in that will contribute a tutorial as well. That stuffs quite a bit more advanced than an ope but would still be useful to have eventually! <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.redlynxgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=9794">viewtopic.php?f=83&t=97 94</a><!-- l -->

Good tip. Edited the tut, which you could have done if you were a collaborator.. hint..... hint... http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/dance.gif

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I like the idea. I don't have a ton of advanced experience but I'd be happy to help- trialsvideos at gmail.com
I do have some experience with google docs from work.

Cool. Cool. Email invite sent

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Got another one for ya guys. Using Modulos to Cycle Values I have a few ideas for the next one, let me know which one is most useful:
For multiplayer testing purposes:
1. controllable camera similar to editor camera for watching others run your track and allowing others to view things from other angles (useful for feedback).
2. Using LB and RB to switch between checkpoints (again, awesome for testing with friends).
General purpose stuff:
3. controlling motors with data sources.
4. Using Interpolation on data sources (could tie 3 and 4 into one if needed).
5. basic global object position events.

This. It may also encourage some people to actually do some testing before releasing their tracks! lol

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
great idea guyz this method should help explaining the more advanced stuff tremendously
someone should do a tut on making things flyable/drivable cause it seems hella complicated
ive been trying to figure it out for a week with no luck

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Hey guys, I'm getting a lot of private messages saying this is a good idea, and that's awesome, but post in the thread too just so anyone who might be thinking about making a tutorial knows that there is actually interest in this. Also, if you are sending me your email to collab, then definitely post in here too, just so I know you're a legit member of the community and not someone looking to crap all over the tutorials since you'll be able to create new ones and edit existing ones.
Nas T, your invite is on the way http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/dance.gif

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Haven't gone into the editor to test this one yet, only thing that might need to change is add a delay between the Set Value Events and the Player Event. I think it should work though.

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I got an email from someone who was interested in contributing but they have no idea how to use Google docs so I thought I'd take a second to explain just how easy it is...
First off, if you can figure out the Evo editor, you can damn sure figure out Google docs, and in about a minute flat.
I have a template file that contributors can access to grab the yellow tiles and arrows to build their logic. Then you just add some text to help explain what's going on. It's that simple. Just place the arrows and tiles just like you do in the editor so people know exactly how to set it up on their own.

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Here's a tutorial for the method I used in LynxBall to loop a sound effect while the bonus points get added to the total score at the end of each round.
Interpolate Score With Looping Sound

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Just added a pretty fun one, a manually controlled camera ideal for multiplayer testing runs. Switch to camera mode to watch your friends struggle through your track. Tried it out with a few people today, makes it so much easier to see what sections they breeze through and what sections they get stuck on.

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
as a collaborator i wanna add a few things that could help, but i have no idea what i know that others would want to know lmao. Ill take rquests? Anyone see anything in my tracks that they would like explanation of, if i hear nothing back i will ad a logic that Ricky Reb helped me set up to remove a fault on a reset to checkpoint event., this fault removal happens only one time, whenever you want, after that it counts faults like normal, ill draw this out later tonight..i cant think if anything else right now. I feel like my knowledge of the editor is very basic compared to these other guys!

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Put another one up in response to a different thread. Not tested yet, but can't see why it wouldn't work.
Edit: works http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
hey nannerdw, nice score logic there. took me a minute to figure it out, but I really like how it works.
Currently not having any ideas for another one, but I know there are tons more great things we could put up. Someone did mention flying/driving objects, but I'd really have to be in the mood to sit down and really cook up one for that....and that's not going to be today http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif . Anyone else have any requests/suggestions?

I know many people struggle to move water. JJ did write out a guide in a thread somewhere, but that would be an awesome tutorial to have in visual form as moving water with an OPE is a pita. Please include the triggers for a start and stop if you do it!
-
Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I finally found that thread where JJ explained how to move it, and I don't really see what the problem is with moving water. It looks just like moving any other object with an OPE using global instead of local. Am I missing something?

Dummy objects. Global positioning with a bunch of data sources. Its just way more complicated than a simple OPE, data source, Impulse trigger. It has about 5 times as many things you need to use compared to a local position OPE. I manage dto make it work following his guide, but a visual guide would make it so much easier. Plus its hard to find his guide whereas this would group it with the others making it easier to find.
Trust me, moving water seems to be way beyond some of us compared to a normal OPE! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_redface.gif http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon/razz.gif

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I keep forgetting that people don't like global OPE. I guess that would be a good one. I always try to use global with an OPE unless I can't. I also prefer to avoid curved data sources. I used local on the camera just cuz that was easier to write in Google Docs and the camera didn't need any level of accuracy. Global OPEs are so much better at accurate movements that I can't understand why more people don't try to use them. Hopefully after they see the logic for it they will reconsider. I'll get started on it now.

Wahoo! Local ones are so easy once you do your first one, I think thats why I've stuck with them. I dont doubt global can be much better but I just find them so daunting. Having a visual explanation will be really useful to me I hope. So, no pressure, but this better be really awesome! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...s/icon_lol.gif http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...s/icon_lol.gif http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...s/icon_lol.gif Joke!

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I just set up the "Switch Between Checkpoints" logic on my latest track and it works great. It's perfect for testing a track with friends online. It allows everyone to jump to any checkpoint with a button press just like you do in the editor, but now it works in online multiplayer. Now I just have to remember to disable it before sharing the track.
-
Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I try to use global coordinates whenever possible to avoid compounded roundoff errors.
-
Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
For the CP skip setup, I added Y to return to start. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_cool.gif
And when the RTCP is at 0, LB is disabled.
And when RTCP is at rightmost CP (before finish line), RB is disabled.
And each CP sets the RTCP's value to match your current CP. So, for example, when at CP 3, RTCP's value is 3.
Works EXACTLY like the editor CP skip http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on/biggrin.gif

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
I'll tidy up my code so it makes more sense while I await your invite http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on/biggrin.gif
EDIT
Just saw your invite. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_cool.gif Now I just need to learn how to use docs.
EDIT 2
For anyone that would like to allow friends to test tracks more effectively, try this little setup. It lets you skip between CP's just like in the editor http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_mrgreen.gif Credit goes to Luthanick for the idea.

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
So the global OPE example is up. Also, I tried to see the whole moving water problem... still can't figure out why people are having a hard time with moving it. I see that the actual position of the water is a bit below the plane, but when you consider the area which is considered underwater it is actually smack dab in the middle. Think of it as moving a whole pool, not just the surface. I could see water being very tricky to rotate using local because of this, but once I put it on global it moved perfectly for me without having to worry about the "offset" center. Moving water and rotating water with the global example works EXACTLY the same as moving any other object.
All that to say...Global OPE imo should be your main OPE. Local is good for movement like the camera example, global is good for just about everything http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif

Coolio. I get what you're saying, maybe it was the global ope I struggled with and not realising the "offset" targeting. I probably targeted the surface. Will be checking global ope out for sure!

Re: Visual Tutorials using Google Docs
Hello everyone, really like the idea of this thread, gonna learn some useful tricks within the editor and hope to add a few tutorials myself.
