noob help on level editor
I started working on a map i penned out, but i'm new to this editor and I'm struggling to understand something.
I'm setting up a limited rotation hinge so i bridge can fall into place. I set two pieces up, right and left. Add the limited rotation hinge. Glue the left to the panel 1 of the hinge, glue the right to panel 2.
that works, if I set physics on one of the planks. But I'm trying to use a trigger. So i don't enable the physics (i want the trigger to start it) I then glue everything together, then add a trigger. Attach the trigger to the whole mechanism and test it by dropping an object on the trigger. It doesn't activate.
I'm missing something but I'm not sure what. My guess is maybe the order in which I'm doing things?
I'm familiar with these types of things but not in this editor, so i'm a little stuck
Re: noob help on level editor
Is the physics box checked on the trigger?
Re: noob help on level editor
ugh, yes that was it. I assumed physics was on by default on triggers.
Thanks. Man, i feel like I'm starting all over having never done this before http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif
Re: noob help on level editor
Whenever a box is checked that indicates what the trigger will turn on or cause to happen. When the box is unchecked the trigger will not perform any of those actions or turn off an action that is already in progress. If a box is falling and a trigger with the physics box unchecked is attached to it and triggered then the box will stop wherever it is.
Re: noob help on level editor
well, after looking through this I'm going to need to study the process. it's much too different to just 'pick up'. I saw a couple tutorials but they're very basic. Is there any more advanced tutorials, or documentation I could read to get up to speed?
thanks
Re: noob help on level editor
One thing is you can't trigger off physics of an object itself. Example. If you have a falling box and want it to stop, you need to attach something else to it to stop the motion.
Re: noob help on level editor
The way I understand it is you're trying to test the trigger using an object. If that's the case, hinges can't be tested like that, they just fall. You'll have to ride through the trigger.
And as Jarr said, an object cannot affect it's own properties (physics off, lights on/off, break/explode)

You can put an object in the trigger in the editor itself, not having to ride. Hinges won't work like that?? I'd rather test ride anyway thats more consistent how to fix things that aren't working properly.
btw, honestly I wouldn't try to learn the HD editor now, its WAY too late lol Evo is out next week! and the trigger system is completely different.

You didn't know that?! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...s/icon/eek.gif But yea, riding is the best way to test.

No I always test ride lol Why wouldn't hinges work? That kinda doesn't make sense. If you turn on physics in the editor itself? Weird.

I don't know! It's just one of those weird things. But I hope our banter helps FastNOC http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on/biggrin.gif
EDIT
My mistake. It's the object that falls, not the hinge. But still, it don't work right unless you ride through the trigger.
Re: noob help on level editor
wait, I thought I read that the editor would use the same principles in evo as this one? that's why I started learning it. if that's not the case there's no reason at all to learn this. I was thinking I'd be getting a head start.
sheesh.
Re: noob help on level editor
From what I´ve seen basic stuff is only slightly different. Trigger system has been improved/made easier. And naturally there is a ton of new stuff.

You can learn if you want. Its not like it would hurt haha Knowing the editor in THD will be a GREAT advantage for those in Evo that have used in for several years (like I have) Just saying, it will be different. Obviously the base editor will be the same, controls and such, basic tools. But theres the more advanced stuff, and also the triggers are different (slightly) but still different.
Hey, a week or two experience is better than 0 http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif Sorry didn't mean to discourage. Everyone will have a lot to learn when Evo drops, its a whole new ball game! Just those with experience already in THD will have a leg up in the editor.
Re: noob help on level editor
Isn't there a "help" section in the game? I remember seeing good tips in there as well, might want to give that a look for the basics http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon/smile.gif
