Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Edited: Reviews so far:
Skyrim - 10/10
Hexen - 9/10
Doom - 10/10
Portal: Still Alive - 4.5/5 Star League
Mercury HG - 4/5 A League
From Dust - 4.5/5 A League
Fusion:Genesis - 3.5/5 A League
Orcs Must Die - 4.5/5 A League
Splosion Girl - 3/5 A League
I've been meaning to review games for a while now. So may as well start with a game 7 million people are discussing.
Skyrim Review 1
Skyrim is legendary! What's astonishing to me is how this open world is exciting wherever I go. This isn't at all at the standard of Oblivion, but with better graphics. No, it's so much richer than that. The atmosphere is phenomenal. The music in the title screen heralds what is a 10/10 game. The game leaves me with goosebumps and I'm left thinking about it long after I finish playing.
So I'm thinking 10/10 for Skyrim. All reviews are subject to changes of score, but this is something I'll do for games that I will have more difficulty scoring.
Rant 1 - Lives in Skyrim
So I'm the kind of loon who believes that if you die, you die. I wish Skyrim did something about this, such as allowing new characters to start at a higher level and not asking the player to do all the core quests all over again. So I'm following a policy where I get an extra life every 5 levels. Good luck to my level 3 lizard and fourth character. He's gonna need it. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_e_smile.gif
Mercury HG review 2
So you move left, right, and up by tilting the board. It's a purist speedrunning game. Most of the levels are really short, but some of the later ones are long and the bonus levels are a good length (20-30s to do a level) and I like those ones because the blob keeps getting bigger (a small story), which becomes harder to control. I like the simple, abstract visuals because it feeds my imagination. The trance-like music is a definite plus.
I classify arcades as either B League or A league. Mercury HG gets 4/5 and is B League. It loses 0.5 for not capping the speed on the blob, allowing a small group of CENSORED to cheat. And it loses another 0.5 for having far too many really simple and boring levels.
On the plus, it's very challenging if you want to get a fast time. It offers about 240 challenges. Not bad for its low price.
Rant 2 - My Jewel accomplishment
No I'm not talkin' 'bout BFTP. I'm talking about a level in Mercury HG where I embarress every other player from a pool of 15,000 players. Yes, including the CENSORED.
In the level Antixenon I have a time of under 40s and the next fastest time is 70s. An explanation behind this anomaly? This level is a puzzle level. I split my blob a total of... lets see... 4 times and steer them to victory. Most people tremble at the idea of splitting their blob once. So to do it 4 times is AWESOME, kind of like the way Lord Voldemort split his blob 7 times, but he's a generic, shallow, and implausible character, so I win. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image..._e_biggrin.gif
Hexen Review 7
I grew up with the Dooms, Rise of the Triad, and Wolfenstein (God I played that ****e game so many times). I played Hexen on the N64 and have a few years ago played its predecessor, Heretic.
Hexen was the last 3D shooter that used sprites and which came out before Quake. Duke 3D used sprites but came out after Quake. Hexen was unique because it offered 3 classes, and had an rpg flavor heavy on exploration (if I remember right). The atmosphere was great too.
However, in terms of pure aesthetics and gameplay, Hexen is a shade of the revolution that was Doom and Doom II. It's something to pick up and enJoy only after you have played those ones (and I'm very fond of Rise of the Triad too). It's perhaps one of the earliest well made rpg-like games.
I'm thinking 9/10 and +-0.5 because I can't really say. Of course it would get a different score based on the 2011 standard.

This is gonna be hard to maintain once you get past lvl 20. Just enjoy it and if you die you die.
Review a Ryan Gosling movie. He's so freakin awesome it hurts.

Re: Starfire's Reviews and Rants (2 reviews and 2 rants!)
It will take me a long time to get to level 20 as it is, so not too worried. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_razz.gif

Re: Starfire's Reviews and Rants (2 reviews and 2 rants!)
From Dust - review 3
Ill keep it short. It gets 4/5 and is B League. It loses 0.5 for horrendous controls, another 0.5 for its uneventful campaign (there is an achievement related to the campaign that should have been explained in the campaign) and it loses another 0.5 for its many crappy challenge levels (it has 30 challenge levels).
However, it gains a special 0.5 for its natural, earthly themes that I love like crazy. It is one of the best relaxation games out there. It's good therapy in my opinion. It taps into your primordial core.

Re: Starfire's Reviews and Rants (3 reviews and 3 rants!)
Genesis - Review 4
I haven't played much and, like all rpgs, it will almost certainly get better later on. This top-down shooter is best described as an rpg. You choose missions, you join 1 of 6 factions and migrate between them. You level up. You level up your accompanying vehicle called a sentient. You buy guns, you buy new sentients, you buy new ships, and so on.
The game is a pain in the ***. The inventory screen is hell. The missions are bland. Given that this is a bare-bones arcade game, I cannot understand why they stuffed it with so much junk. If I want an rpg, I will more than happily play Skyrim. Don't try to be what is completely out of the range of a team of 4 people.
Shame they couldn't have made 10 proper missions/levels and called it a day.
Genesis gets 3.5/5 and is B League.
-
Re: Starfire's Reviews and Rants (4 reviews and 2 rants!)
Any other game requests? I don't know that person Ender, and I don't know too many movies either.
I'm thinking I should change B League to A League and up A League to Star League. That way I'm nice to everyone.
-
Re: Starfire's Reviews and Rants (4 reviews and 2 rants!)
Last film with Ryan in I saw was Drive. It was a good film but I'm definitely not a fan of his. He's like a wooden Christian Bale.
-
Re: Starfire's Reviews and Rants (4 reviews and 3 rants!)
Rant 3 - The economy in Fusion Genesis.
Now this story is a real spinner. I go into the auction and decide to bid on two cheap-*** things that would cost me $4,000. I had saved up $14,000 from about 5 hours of playing, so I felt I needed to spend it on some pointless junk. After making my bid of $1,700 for the second item, I find that my money changes to -$165,000!! Like WTF!!
I lost both auctions and got the $4,000 returned to me. So I'm now at -$160,000!! WHAT A *COUGH* TERRIBLE GAME!!
As you might have guessed, the cheapest items of around $500 are now TOTALLY UNAFFORDABLE!!

Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Review 5 - Orcs Must Die
The first clear thing I thought about this game was "refined". The game is well balanced, the enemies are distinct, the attacks and traps are distinct. It is intense - especially on Nightmare mode. And the music is mesmeric.
Shame the environments do not come in, say, three themes. And I would have liked to have unlocked all the levels when nightmare mode is unlocked.
What kept it very interesting was that you get a new ability or trap in each level right until the finish. Great work, team. I'd love a sequel. 5/5 A League (note that I lifted all my arcade reviews to A League - check the first post for a summary)

Review 6 - Portal: Still Alive.
I own the Orange Box, which has portal without the bonus levels and leaderboards. I played Portal a lot. I got silver on all the challenges and gold on half the challenges. Proudest accomplishment is 9 steps in the first challenge. It's a great original game and has the trademarks that made Valve famous.
Here's where it loses points. The steps challenges are too strict. If you breathe on the analog stick, your character will move. What a load of bull. Ever heard of shuffling one's feet, Valve? What this means is you need to save and load and repeat to do very basic movements. Pfft. Pass.
And the Orange Box doesn't have leaderboards. So suck on this: you lose half a point. Portal Still Alive gets 4.5/5 and is Star League.
-
Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Wait a second, I thought that the Portal that came with the Orange Box was just "Portal" and that the version on XBLA, with the bonus levels and such, was "Portal: Still Alive". I could certainly be mistaken though.
Here's some games from my past that I want to see reviewed:
Star Wars: JTL
Portal 2
CoD: MW (Story mode! 1, not 2 or 3!)
1000 Heroz
Alien Phobia III
Hexen
And we'll keep it at that for now.
PS: It would be easier to read your reviews if you post them to your original post and just post a new message saying that you added a certain review. Also, purple = BAD COLOR CHOICE! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_e_smile.gif

Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Thanks Shifty. I haven't played Portal Still Alive, but it was requested so I reviewed it. I strongly doubt that the extra levels (which are not a part of the original story) would improve the score. If anything, they might lower the score, but I doubt it.
Hmm maybe I should provide a list of games I've played. Of that list, I can only review Hexen (what I remember of it - that game is ancient!).

Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
I haven't played Trials second edition. Shifty, ah yes Hexen, the last 3D shooter with sprites instead of polygons, the last of its kind before Quake revolutionized the gaming table.

Quake Shmake. Hexen is KING!

And, Star, I do believe the extra level would bump Portal's score up to a 6/5 http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_razz.gif
Nice review.

Cheers Bobo. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image..._e_biggrin.gif No way, if Portal gets 6/5, what should Trials HD get??

rant 4
So as you know I'm doing this thing in SKyrim where I get a new life every 5 levels. I was at level 11 with my fourth character, feeling good that I was at two lives, I'd Just bought a stack of new spells in Whiterun, and when I left Whiterun I was in unfamiliar territory.
The FIRST enemy I meat, a random spawn http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...con_asleep.gif know this cos when I went back there, there was no enemy at all) with a two-handed axe, kills me. What really peeved me was that I killed him, but he regenerated fully, and then the bastard did a finish move on me when I was at 75% health!! What bull!!
And then a freakin' bear kills me one second before I heal... I really think I lost this life cos I was still peeved off over the first death.
I'm at level 14 with 0 lives. What a lousy adventurer I have been. Hopefully I'll get a new life pretty sOOn.
****
bump. Got a Hexen review on the first page Just where you like it, Shifty Hamster.

Review 8 - Doom
Haven't played Destiny, Bobo. Doom is legendary. It uses the mouse in a way that makes modern, controller FPS's play overly simplistically. A professional speedrunning site has been set up with about 7 core categories of speedrunning. All 27 levels have been played thoroughly. Doom spawned a massive online community of dedicated mappers and modders and programmers, which is still going strong 15 years since the debut.
When a person spends over a year to release a map for Doom in 2011, you know that this game has transcended all norms.
Doom gets 10/10. Absolutely uncontested in both gameplay and community-based maps.

Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Nice info on Doom, but just to be clear, that's not at all what I asked for http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...n_rolleyes.gif "Doom & Destiny" is an AWESOME RPG. Haven't finished it yet though. Has some references that you can't help but smile/laugh at. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image..._e_biggrin.gif

Bobo's tracks. - review 9
Creative like kiss. Sometimes the driving line feels a bit strange on the first attempt, but then it's really good. Some of the hard levels are at extreme difficulty if the official standard is the guide.
Detail is harmonious with the design.
Favorites are that 16 bit trip, Limbo, and the dark one which is a bit like 16 bit trip.
You are more creative than everyone else on my dwindling friends list. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_redface.gif
-
Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Thanks!! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_mrgreen.gif
I assume the extreme parts you're most referring to are the "gorge" and "fire posts" on 16-Bit Trip. I try to select the average difficulty of the overall track, not the most challenging obstacle.
I wonder if you found the alternate route on that track..? It lets you skip past the gorge and posts http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_e_smile.gif
That dark track is Urban FortRace. It's the one I entered in the Big Thrills Contest. I've done much better since, but I'm glad someone likes it http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_cool.gif
I notice you like the tracks with the 1-bit Trip-style camera. I tend to favor that, too. It gives a greater sense of scale. And it's cool have more stuff onscreen http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image..._e_biggrin.gif
-
Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
In this case I should be thanking you! So THANKS!!!
Ye, the thing is you make excellent use of the wide camera angle. I've played other tracks with the wide view, and they were much worse. When it comes to your tracks, I'd have to say I prefer it.

I think you should review the first game you remember playing.

Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Splosion Girl.
It sucks. THe title is wrong. Fix it morons! The gameplay is masochistic. The speed is too fast. The load screen sucks. Everything blows.
3/5 A League.

Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Thanks for reading, Bobo. Ok, not everything blows, but I didn't like it.
Seriously, the title Ms Splosion Man is very derogatory to ladies.
-
Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
And on a fresh surge of inspiration I'm lowering the score to 3/5 A Laegue.
-
Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
How is it derogatory? It's just a throw-back to Ms. Pac-Man
-
Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
Ladies are not men. They don't want to be called men. They don't play games and I can't find a female gamer and have sex with her because all the games are solely masculine and the industry shuns femininity all the way out of our solar system. Ms Pac Man is equally derogatory and pathetic.
-
Re: Starfire wants to DO more reviews! Please make a request!
You're a little off there. Ms Splosion Man and Ms Pac-Man are just names. They are Splosion Man and Pac_Man's wives. They simply took their husband's last names. And yea games are masculine. Most gamers are male. It would be nice if games had better female characters, but I don't really give a crap about gender. But whenever possible I do play as a female. Not a *****y one though http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_e_smile.gif
