Shifty's Projects - Experimental Trials-Lightcycle!
If you haven't viewed my thread before, then Thanks for looking now! There's quite a few different projects that have been talked about, or shown, on the next few pages!
I am new to 3D modeling, I have only been doing it for about 45 days (12-21-2011) now, and it's a great way to lose hours of your life. Please, take a minute to look at what's here, leave some feedback (good is good, negative is great as long as you explain what you think I did wrong!), and even request/suggest a new project.
Thanks to the people who are already posting feedback, I appreciate it!
EDIT: Video on page 2
EDIT: The renders start on post 10, the first 9 posts are about problems installing the program. Do yourself a favor and skip to post 10 unless you like reading my complaints.
Ok, maybe the wrong board to post this into, but here goes anyways.
I downloaded the demo software package for 3Ds Max 2012. First it didn't want to install at all saying it was missing a .cab, I burned the image to a disc and then it found the cab file.
Halfway through installing the program it just froze. I thought that maybe my PC was too old and weak to successfully install or run it.
Installed a 4 core AMD Phenom II CPU and then the program installed fine. When I start the program I have serious issues.
Namely the fact that re program never really starts. I keep getting an error 110 (licensing) and I can't for the life of me figure out why. It should be using the 30-Day demo license. It claims I don't have any license at all. After I click the Activate button the whole PC freezes for about 10 minutes and it throws up an error 20 code.
I scrounged through the AutoDesk website, and followed all the relevant tips, but I still get the same error and I feel like I am banging my head against a wall.
Help me, anyone.

Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
My online sucks anyways. Played about 1 1/2 hours of survival with vileDOMINATION. We made it to like wave 10 the first 2 tries and vile got an achievement for knifing that heavily armored/armed juggernaut guy while I kept his attention.
I need better interweb connectivity. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon_e_sad.gif
Anyhow, I got 3ds Max installed and licensed, but now it hangs on initializing. I exceed every minimum requirement so I don't know why it hates me. Sad Dan.
-
Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
Yeah, Max has a lot of strange problems. Especially with the trial licenses. If you reinstall it or do something unusual, it might suddenly say that your trial period has expired. Not fun.
You could try temporarily disabling your AV software and make sure that you have at least a few gigabytes of free disk space on your OS partition.
Or you could use the 2011 version which seems to work much better anyway.
-
Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
I have an older version of 3dsMax (2010 I think) but never got around to installing it, mainly because I was using an old ATI 9800 GPU chipset.
I have MOST av software disabled but Microsoft Security Essentials won't die no matter how I end the process or process tree, it just reinitializes itself.
I also make sure that I run the program with Administrator rights. I am currently reinstalling Win7 on a secondary drive with my older install on a drive sitting on my desk. I'm hoping that maybe a fresh install with only drivers added will see this thing up and running.
I will actually try the 2010 3Ds Max version first.
Edit: The drive I installed to before has 1Tb free space. The drive I will be installing to will have whatever is left after a clean install on a 2Tb disk.
-
Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
Wish I could help ya, I'm not too good on things like installing software and how to fix what is wrong with it.
If you have questions about how to use the program when you figure it out, I am fairly good with 3d max and Maya. Its been 5 or 6 years, but the programs couldnt have changed that much, right?
-
Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
Up and running.. I think.... Kinda.
I keep getting strange errors when I use the Bevel modifier that always result in the app crashing, with the project save failing as well.
Anyone know of any good video tutorial websites?
@jook13 - I had a copy that AutoDesk sent me (fully working and FREE!) in 2000. Let's just say that 12 years of program updates and changes makes me feel lost.

Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
Got it working well enough to bust out a render, I then tweaked it in AE. These frames are from the video that I haven't rendered, they are clickable links to HD versions:
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg13/...jpg&res=medium
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg819...jpg&res=medium
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg27/...jpg&res=medium
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg269...jpg&res=medium
That's really all I have for now. Not too bad, I think, for a 1st (in many years) 3D Modeling/Video Composite project.
Let me know if you guys have any thoughts on the pictures.

Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
It looks great! Could use some more things floating around, but I have no idea how it is to make that kind of stuff. I think RL should use your renders some day http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image..._e_biggrin.gif
-
Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
Thanks for the kind words!
Do you mean the white particles that are most clear in the last picture? They aren't that difficult to create, I just didn't want to go overboard with them. I do need to find out how to output 3Ds Max's scene cameras so I don't need to use motion tracker in After Effects.
Also, I have 2 lens flares in the scene. Flares are my crack, but it's alright if they look good. One reflects off of the "D" in Redlynx, and the other is the cause of the orange colored rings that are most visible in the third picture.
Since you replied I am asking you, are they overpowering/distracting, or do they actually add to the scene?
-
Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
I like the flare. And I would definitely say go nuts with the specks. Make it look like space with tons of stars whizzing by http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_razz.gif Like how how in the middle pic RedLynx is all glowy, that could be a supernova revealing the logo http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image..._e_biggrin.gif
-
Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
Hmmm. I need to see how to export 3D data for importing to After Effects.
-
Re: Massive Problems with 3Ds Max
Couple of renders. (RE)Learning how to create structures from simple geometric shapes. It seems that my texturing skills from long ago carry over to this newer version of 3Ds Max.
I actually got away with 9 textures in this one, here's the list;
Mirror/Chrome - Mirror and Desk/Chair Metal
Checkered High Gloss Flooring
Dark Plastic/Metal - Mirror Setting, non-metal Chair and Desk Components, Door, Wall Text, and Wall Molding
Eraser
Pencil Paint
Metal Eraser to Pencil clip thing
Pencil Lead
Paper
Wall Paint
Anyhow, Where do Redlynx track builders go when they aren't pulling their weight? That's right, the "Room for Uninspired Level Design". Forced to create a track masterpiece (or reasonable facsimile of Antti's beard) with nothing but a single pencil and sheet of paper.
The HORROR!
Wait a second! Is that a regular mirror, or are Antti and the squirrels watching your every move?! I don't know! Neither do you! But why is it recessed?! What could that possibly mean?! ARE THEY WATCHING YOU RIGHT THIS MOMENT?!
THE HUMANITY!
What the hell? There's no freakin' DOOR KNOB! How can they get out? THEY CAN'T!
Someone call Batman!
http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/9...ncelcscene.jpg
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/191...euplcscene.jpg
My next project will http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...con_asleep.gif think) be a motorcycle helmet, probably with a full mask. The reflectivity of the visor will allow me to focus on the outside geometry, whereas an open helmet requires twice as much work, and added texturing for the inside surfaces.
I know, it's lame and cheating,, but I'm still learning.

Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
Seems like I lied, http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_mrgreen.gif . I took on a slightly more complicated project, here's a few pictures from the INPROG.
Left:
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg9/s...jpg&res=medium
Front:
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg443...jpg&res=medium
Top:

Perspective:

An "Artsy" shot:
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg507...jpg&res=medium
Basically I built the frame, then the front fork and fender (2-sided NURBS surface). I started work on the rear swing-arm (spring-arm?), and then I had to stop. This is my progress for today.
Remember, I am just learning, so don't be TOO mean. But if you have actual knowledge of Trials motorcycles, please tell me what it blatantly wrong, I'd appreciate it!
-
Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
Holy Santa's meatballs!
I don't have any knowledge, but the rectangle body looks a bit odd. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_razz.gif
-
Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
I actually did a google image search for "trials motorcycle frame" and most were round. I based my frame on one that wasn't. It seemed more unique. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_e_smile.gif

Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
Really impressive stuff Dan!
That bike is turning out awesome... can't wait to see more inprog pics and what else you can come out with. Crazy!
-
Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
Engine, transmission(?), Brake discs and calipers, Front and rear sprockets.
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/147...blynochain.jpg
Rims, Tires, Foot pegs, Hand grips, and Exhaust (can't see it in this shot). I also did some work on the forks and connected the front fender to it.
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/8...reassembly.jpg
The discs still need some work, I want them to be drilled/slotted, and the calipers aren't actually connected to anything.
Next is gas tank, brakes and clutch, wiring/tubing, and then the plastic body pieces http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...con_asleep.gif don't know what they are called).
Edit: Coming along nicely, I think.
Rear Tire Assembly:

Front Tire Assembly:

Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
Ok, did a LOT of smaller detail work, still not finished, but it's getting close.
I added some body panels (faring?), tweaked the rims/tires, added all the hose and cabling, minor work on the wheel assembly, yadda yadda yadda, and blah blah blah.
Here's what I have.
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/6602/trialsbike.jpg
I want to "finish" the fairings, add some extra details to the wheel rubber and to the frame metal as well.
Anyhow, hope some one enjoys these.
PS: The front tire is exactly the same size as the rear, I jacked up the perspective view somehow and it's throwing off the render's perspective... http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...icon_e_sad.gif

Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
-
Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
No. It takes 3 minutes to render 1 frame, so I don't think I'll be testing much animation.
-
Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
A few more screen shots, this is a video project I am currently working on so motion blur is turned on. I'll try to post some regular (clear) 3Ds Max renders of the finished bike at the end of the post.
Sorry, these are a bit large....
Front Fork:
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/3746/fronttire.jpg
Handlebars:
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/1337/handlebars.jpg
The Rear (or Redlynx) tire:
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/2654/redlynxtire.jpg
Ok, here's a few screens from 3DsMax.
Wire Frame:
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/8760/wireframey.jpg
And the final version of the motorcycle. Not a bad project to get "started" with. The motorcycle ended up with 314,100 polygons, which is a few more than needed. I have multiple faces where one would do, and I could probably take the count down to 250-300k easily.
Edit:
Duh, I didn't post an actual render of the finished bike....

Gorgeous work, Shifty!! How long did it take?

Oh wow, didn't think there would be pictures and exciting trailers. Keep at it, you multi-talented beast-monkey. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_e_smile.gif

Ummm. Probably about 8 hours for the bike. If I made another it would probably take around 2-3 hours as most of what I did was trial and error trying to find a way to accomplish what I wanted to do when I didn't have a clue.
This whole project is insanely fun because I enjoy learning new things and 3D modeling allows me to build without breaking out a welding torch or knowing all of the technical aspects of something.
I didn't know if my second project should be so involved when I started, but it turned out a bit better than I thought it would.
Thanks for the kind words guys.

Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
That's crazy awesome! Can't wait to see this "video project" you speak of using the bike.
-
Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
I am trying to bake my textures so that I can export the scene (a glass version of the motorcycle, the floor, and wall) into DWF format so that people can view the model from more angles than I can really render.
I'll be using the default material for this project, so it will really just be a lot of grey tones, but it should give a better representation of the model.
I might just be posting for my own benefit (Yay, I did something else!), but if anyone actually views these things, then that's good enough for me.

Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer
Nice! I was actually expecting and hoping to see more of the bike.
Music so badass! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...s/icon_lol.gif

Re: Shifty's 3Ds Max/After Effects Renders and JUNK.
Wow, that is actually really well done. The opening could use a little ambient noise to fill the awkward silence and the third quote is a little hard to read, but otherwise, bravo http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image..._e_biggrin.gif
-
Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer
Pretty impressive. Good job.

Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer
With Shifty's efforts maybe I new top player will be tempted to Join the scene. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_idea.gif
Awesome work Shifty,*

Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer
I never say this word cuz it's over-used and means nothing most of the time, but I HAVE TO say this is *&%^ing LEGIT!!! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image.../icon_cool.gif I do agree that the opening could use some noise, though.
-
Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer
@StarFire - What? I didn't really understand your post.
@Everyone - Thanks for the awesome comments guys. It's really appreciated.
About the beginning of the video:
It could just be my headphones, but there are ambient tones in the beginning. It was a bit overpowering before so I toned it down. Maybe I took the level down too much.
I wanted it to be quiet because it was a way to show that the bike hasn't been used a lot lately, then, when the engine starts it gets exciting.
Just like Trials... http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_e_smile.gif

Re: Shifty's 3DsMax/AE Projects - Evolution Trailer
Hey man it's awesome how you keep growing and growing on stuff that interest you. You are a model example of a human being.
no homo!
