Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
How to use hinges - 4 wheel vehicle
1) Create base frame (ramp in pic 1)
2) Create 4 wheels (pic 2)
3) Create free rotation hinge (tools category) between wheel 1 and base frame (pic 3-4)
4) Glue wheel 1 to free rotation part 1 (right part in pic 4)
- Select wheel
- Press up for object properties window
- Press glue
- Select free rotation part 1
5) Glue base frame to free rotation part 2 (left part in pic 5)
- Select frame
- Press up for object properties window
- Press glue
- Select free rotation part 2
6) Repeat 3 times (NOTE. You need to hold LB for sub-selection, you will need it while attaching base frame to other free rotation hinges)
Edit. And also all parts needs to be physics enabled. (Frame and wheels)

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
could you explain more i cant get my "cart" to work
-
Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
put physics on all the wheels and ramp
attach the outside rotation to the wheels and the inside rotation to the ramp

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
nice so thats how its done

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
For some reason I'm still having some trouble with this. I can glue my first wheel to the hinge and then the base to the hinge and that works fine, but when I try to glue the base to any other hinge something goes wrong. I set up the other three wheels like I had done to the first one and glued them to the rotation hinge but I can't get the base to stick to them. I hold the LB after selecting the base then I click on one of the second hinges and it will not stick like the first one did. What exactly am I doing wrong?

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
You need to hold LB and select the base to glue it after you have already glued it once

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
Wow do I feel dumb....
This whole time I was holding LB then (while still holding it) selecting the 2nd rotation part. Thanks for the help.

Same here~
Thank you for the guides guys..

I must be dumb... i still can't get this to work. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...on_redface.gif http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...s/icon_cry.gif
Could someone add when I have to press LB and when I release LB to the walkthrough posted above? Take me through it wheel by wheel if you can...
thanks!

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
right i have attached the first wheel fine. now i go to attach the ramp tp the wheel by selecting the ramp pressing lb and picking the wheel
correct?

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
has anybody found an easy way to allign the four wheels? My cart always ends up lopsided :/

Always make sure to use the snap rotation to ensure nice straight objects (LB I think) and if placing the wheel onto the floor enable physics so that it will sit flat.
Once you have one wheel in place make sure that the camera is directly behind the ramp/cart, use the copy function (Y) and then simply transpose the new wheel to the other side of the cart with the left stick. If you are careful with the stick movement you should be able to keep it all in line.
Now that you have a pair of aligned wheels [Edit:] use the sub-selection tool (hold LB) to select both wheels [/Edit] and use copy again to create the next pair, this time transposing them to the front or back of the ramp. The key to it all is the camera position so you'll need to be in the advanced mode to manoeuvre it properly.
Hope this helps.

Hmm. Good ****, I hadn't thought of using that "snap" feature. It always just looked like it put them in random positions. Thanks for the tips!

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
Hi again, staying up all night and then offering advice is probably not best. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/image...e_confused.gif
Now if I want to align something I use the Right Stick Click (Once only), in combination with the snap rotation. With a bit of manipulation of your object you can use the riding line to get everything nice and straight
Also In my previous post I said to glue the wheels before copying them but really you can just use the multi select (Hold LB), which is much faster and less fiddly.

Great thread, Thanks for the help.

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
Thanks! I was wondering how people made carts...
-
Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
I cant seem to get a a metal axel between the tires. The cart always wobbles. I have tried putting tires to ground to match and be even. I can make a cart without the axel but it looks weird.

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
Very well documented tutorial.. thanks for the explanations.

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
Edit. And also all parts needs to be dynamic (Frame and wheels)
Not sure I understand what this means. Could you explain please. Thanks

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
Thank you! Maybe I can finally experiment with making a car again without the danger of it self-destructing every time I pass the trigger.

Letol I know how you feel. lol

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
Also make sure you turn on "LOCK TO DRIVING LINE" for the ramp.
This makes sure the vehicle doesn't turn left or right and go off the track.

Re: Tutorial - Hinge - Free rotation hinge (Skill: Advanced)
YEAH!!
That's what i do
Been a while since last post eh

hmmmm...I wonder what would happen if I DID go off track =-o Unexplored territory! I bet there is some squirrels.

This is good advice for 99% of the time.
However, I have 1 map where the ramp isn't locked to the driving line, so the cart starts to veer ever so slightly as it goes over it's required obstacle, and once the rider is ready to move off the cart, he actually bounces off and over the front left wheel of the cart, because the entire cart has shifted slightly and the wheel is now on the driving line (which wouldn't happen if I had locked the main ramp to the driving line). I think this effect turned out pretty cool, and adds the feeling of an extra dimension.
