Hi, have you contacted technical support?
What is "everything"?
The Sidewinders have been out of production for a while, so Micro$oft technical assistance probably isn't going to do you much good; here's what I'd do:
1) confirm that when the joystick is plugged in that the lights (if any, it's been years since I had a Sidewinder) are lit, and that the little tone that announces that a new device has been plugged or unplugged from your computer can be heard.
2) check in My Computer's Control Panel under Hardware and Sound (view devices and printers) in Windows 7, or Game Controllers under XP and see if the joystick is 'visible' to my computer, and if it can, go through the game controller settings (right click on it in Win 7) and make sure that it responds properly
3) if the first two are a 'no' or a partial yes, unplug the USB and try another port; if that doesn't work, try a little rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip and apply that to your Sidewinder's USB plug's contacts--sometimes, you'll get a buildup of tarnish on the contacts that prevents the signals from getting past.
4) If it still doesn't work and you are more technically inclined, consider replacing your USB cord
5) Failing all of the above, sit down and have good cry, then wipe your face and buy a new joystick.
cheers

That's why I'm affraid to patch-up the game because it'll probly disable my SW P2 somehow and then I will be forced to buy a new fancy-shmancy cobtrol stick with all the fancy doohickeys that I don't need. Thas okay though because I still fly 46 more anyway. Been using a SW P2 since about 2002.
