Weird. What is your PC?
AFAIC.
You just change your Monitor/Windows Display settings. Then go into IL2 Config and change resolution settings there.

I'm trying to get Pacific fighters to work with my Matrox Triplehead2go digital.The TH2go comes with a gaming utility that supports 1946 and Forgotten Battles but not Pacific Fighters.Quote:

Thx Johnny
Sorry,,I figured it out.I have used bntravis's settings and the shortcut was set to run in "normal window" and its working.
The 1st time I tried my settings had reverted back to minimum.
Now all is well
i never noticed this before, until i read this thread.
I have a 5:4 aspect screen (says so on the box), and run a 1280x1024 desktop.
when i adjust the config.ini for that resolution, it gives me a view with the black bars on the top and bottom, with a slightly disorted (squished) picture.
Whats weird is when i run il2 in 1280x960 i get a full picture at 5:4, undistorted.
Sometimes the game doesn't always shut down properly and my desk top will still have the 1280 x960, and there is a noticeable difference.
If it aint broke, don't fix it, but i thought i would share that.
In regard to the last post, the graphical shutdown and re/un-sizing problems could be related to having you sytems GFX Options resolution as a different size to the sizes used in the conf.ini resolution sizes. Try to make all equal to cause less problems when 'exiting' a program.
I have noticed as similar thing on other games where the ingame res' is different to the sytem res'.
Also it could be that a few of the conf.ini gfx related numbers/ingame GFX Options are too high for that resolution. Alter the 'Trees' and/or 'Water' to a lower quality , (and if you dont mind it, set '3D Gunners' to '0').
All right, I'm having some issues.
When I originally purchased the game (from Steam) I was running the Windows 7 beta. Followed the directions here and this worked no problem.
Got tired of having issues with certain programs running in 7, so I bought and installed Vista Ultimate. I installed the 4.08 patch and downloaded the AAA launcher to be able to dual launch into 4.08(mods/no mods) and 4.09(mods/no mods/etc).
The game runs, etc. However, I can not get the resolution to stick in the conf.ini. I changed it from read-only, changed the settings, saved it, and then put it back to read-only. This still didn't force the resolution to load. I have no idea why it's not working now, when it was working in Windows 7.
Any ideas?
Edit: I have searched for other conf.ini files and there are none. Also, I know it's reading from the conf file I'm working on, because if I run the game after setting the res I want, but not setting it to read-only, it changes the resolution back to 800x600.
Edit #2: Well, I managed to get it working. Decided to just uninstall. After doing so, I reinstalled it... and started the game before I patched. After starting it and setting controls and what not, then I quit and set the resolution and all is well.
Yeah, sounds like you have UAC on, with UAC on anything installed in the program files folder will not be allowed to write to .ini files. You could move the entire game folder to a location other than program files, or turn off UAC.
For those with a 19" wide screen (mine is a Samsung 931BW) I was having trouble getting it to run without stretching, (either up or down) and have now got it running correctly. My native resolution is 1400 X 900 and I cannot run 1946 in that resolution without stretching. Here is the cure I used (1946 now runs in wide screen with no black bars even in initial screen).
1 go into conf ini and change width to 1280, height to 960 then save. (make sure EnableResize=0 and SaveAspect=0)
2 Change video mode in "set up" to 1280 X 960
3 Change display settings for your monitor to 1280 X 960 and save
I nolonger have the "Black Bars" showing at any stage and no stretching
You should be able to get it to run just fine in 1400 X 900. Don't settle for less than your native resolution. Go back to the original post in this thread and try again for 1400 X 900. Make sure when you change your conf.ini that you DO NOT run setup again after that or it will undo the changes. Also if it's still stretching make sure when you exit the game that the changes you made to the conf.ini are still there. If not post a new thread and we can find the solution.
Urufu, I have tried all the options as out lined and 1280 X 960 gives me the least stretching (hardly noticeable). As I fly no cockpit it puts all relative information on screen in the right place, if I use 1440 X 900 then I have panels left and right where my speed/ height information and enemy planes approaching indicators are not relative to the edge of the screen (they are placed where the edges of the "Black Bands" would be) and therefore planes that should be seen coming from left or right aren't visable until they are about 20% into the display. If you have a cure for this please advise I would be happy to hear from you
True wide screen in IL-2 is finaly posible. Here are some examples. Original pictures were 1680X1050 16/10 aspect. Single monitor.

I agree. Why would he post those screenshots and then not explain anything? In any case, I believe he is talking about the program in this thread:

I'm trying to get IL-2 to run in widescreen, but am also having trouble getting it to remember my conf.ini settings. I've edited the conf as per the guide at the beginning of this thread, with the resolution set at 1366x768. However, when I start IL-2, it reverts to a (stretched) 640x480 display. Opening the conf.ini afterwards showed that the resolution had been changed to 640x480.
In an effort to avoid this, I set the resolution back to 1366x768 and marked it as read only after saving the changes. THis made no difference; IL-2 still displayed in 640x480, though the conf.ini was unchanged when I inspected it afterwards.
By the way, I found a second conf in My Documents, and repeated the above with this one also. Still no joy.
I've set it to run in Windows XP SP2 compatability mode, and the installation directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\.
I'd really appreciate any advice- I'm all out of ideas!
Thanks
Edit: I'm using Vista (as if that wasn't obvious http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common...n_rolleyes.gif )
Did you go through all the steps?
It looks like you've either missed out steps:
5) Look for 'EnableResize=' and set it to 0.
6) Look for 'SaveAspect=' and set it to 0.
Or you've gone into one of the ingame graphic setup options or the setup application after making those changes.
Or the file is read only and its not saved.
Thanks for the reply,
I've made sure I followed all the steps, and I didn't use the setup application or in game options afterwards.
I think I've found the problem though: the whole of the Il-2 folder is marked as read only. I've tried changing this, and an 'Applying Attributes' status bar indicates that something is happenning- however, these changes don't seem to last. I'm the administrator, and have given myself 'full control'. I also have UAC switched off.
I've tried moving the installation folder out of Program Files (x86), but the same thing happens http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common...icon_frown.gif
I'm new to Vista, so the whole thing is probably just a schoolboy error on my part!
EDIT: Have found a solution! I copied the whole installation folder to an external HD, altered the Conf.ini, then copied it back. A clumsy solution, but it works! Now to remember not to change the graphics settings...
ok guys
I don't know if my problem was Windows 7 related or just widescreen related. I do know that I have always ran this computer (a Dell laptop - 17 inch LCD) like it recommends which is 1920 x 1200 and I have never had a proble before rather it be on Vista or XP.
I never played with the config file under those OS because the game would force itself into 1600 x 1200 and force the screen that size and it worked fine with me. Now under Windows 7 I get the black bars on the side of the screen. I have tried playing with the config file and still can't fix it. I have ran as admina nd still can't fix it.
At this point any ideas or suggestions would be great.
Here is my config file.
[window]
width=1920
height=1200
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=0
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
[GLPROVIDER]
GL=Opengl32.dll
[GLPROVIDERS]
Open GL=Opengl32.dll
DirectX=dx8wrap.dll
Do you get the black bars in the menu or when you're actually flying? You're supposed to have them in the menus but when you get into the game it's full screen. Do you have the game installed in program files folder? If so try moving the whole game folder to a location outside of program files folder and try to edit the conf.ini again and run the game.
Urufu hi.
A lot of the problems people are having resizing then it not saving in the config as you know under win7 is because they are loading 1946 into the program files with UAC on,so its not allowing them to write and save there changes,maybe you should put a sticky under the one for getting the game to run with win7 64bit because this seems another common prob and should cover the 2 most common probs with win 7.
ssssssssssssssssssssssssnake
It's already in a sticky here, first link.
I just got 3 monitors working with eyefinity. Is it possible to get any higher resolution than 2400x600? If I try anything higher than that the game won't start. I've been trying with IL2 Stab and by the config.ini.
Hmm, not sure about that one. Are you using Use3Renders=1 or =0?
I've tried it set both ways, but no dice. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common...n_confused.gif
Hmm, start a new thread and we'll try to troubleshoot the issue there, rather than clutter this up. When you post the new thread include your dxdiag report and your conf.ini file.
Well since I got a widescreen monitor today I'll just say my thanks to this thread. Was gonna make my own but I saw this before I did http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common...icon_smile.gif
Damn things look great in 1920x1080

I too had the same problem after upgrading to System 7. Late model Nvidia drivers gave me fullscreen with tell-tales on the sides....But also caused system lock-ups, which seems to be a common problem. An earlier driver gives me stability in 7 but the narrow screen you mention.
I tried all the solutions mentioned in this thread with varying results...Clocks, messages and telltales inset from sides...no teltales on right side and distorted widescreen......Then I stumbled on a very strange wrinkle:
Set your conf.ini to your desktop/monitor native res, or 1280 X 960 (the largest settable in IL2)...everything appears in narrow screen until you pull down the Esc menu, go into "Video Mode" and flick the "Attempt Stencil Buffering" switch...doesn't matter whether it is on or off as the shadows appear the same both ways.
Screen blacks out, comes back, and my plane views are now full screen with clocks, text messages and telltales all at the edges. I have no idea why this works, it seems to force a graphics card reboot with settings that I want but cannot seem to recreate through normal tinkering. This may be card (GT220) or drivers (Nvidia 186.34) related, but perhaps it will work for you too. :-)
I am running 5760x1080. Works fine. I'll post my graphics settings tonight when I get home see if that helps. Using eyefinity also and I remember I had to do a bit of tweaking before it would run.Quote:

Can you tell us how you got it running in your native resolution? What tweaking did you do? I too am running Eyefinity 6048 x 1200 and would like to know how to get IL2 running in my native resolution with the propper FOV.
I have a curious issue here. I have it running in 1920 x 1080 via an HDMI out on my HD5770 into my Sony Bravia 40" and it all works fine. The only problem is that the perfect textures option is now greyed out. The resolution is set to 640x480x16 in IL so could that be the issue?
Nevermind. I've figured out the OpenGL/32 requirement of the perfect texture setting http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common...icon_smile.gif
If you have problems with black bars when you are flying, then you need to change the saveaspect to =0Quote:

You may still have black bars in the menu's but should be full screen once you fly. Try this
[window]
width=1920
height=1200
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
BUT..change the weidth and height number to the native resolution of your monitor.
Good luck.
i JUST got win7 64....reformatted from win7 32bit.it worked fine in 32bit win7. used entire screen in splash screen with version,breif...into game. I GOT it to full screen but not during splash,breif,ect. in game its full but. NOBODY SAYS its really not 100%....its streched,fills wide screen but if you look at CHAT WINDOW....game is still running narrow.(like as if blk bars are there )....think it doesnt run in 64 bit...in 32 bit....game was flawless...
whats difference in 64bit from 32 bit os. this game is AWFULL if you cant run it %100...need xp back....thats my solution...
There is no difference, did you set SaveAspect=0? Do you have 1946 installed outside of the Program Files folder? This never did work in the splash screen and briefings, only while flying in the game. If you previously had widescreen in the menus then you were running mods to do so.
maaaybe it did have mod cause computer was used with 3 monitor set up. i brought it home...plugged a single 24in dell wide screen and EVERYTHING was normal.(splash screen,breif)and in game of coarse. was perfect !!filled screen like in XP with same monitor.
maybe if we install a 3 MONITOR control panel software we can control screen with the single monitor only!!!? might freaking work...no?
hehe...just guessing but (yes) mightive been a MOD INSTALLED before i reformatted from other owners OS (win7 32bit).he was running 3 monitors.
then theres gotta be a MOD as u say to run this PROPERLY in wide screen with no flaws.ive seen it on this computer b4 i screwed myself with the reformatt....lol
Hi,
having just got a 24" widescreen moniter, thought I would change the settings to widescreen, and have come across a problem!
probably me being thick but when I go to save the file, after making the alterations, it says access denied? I have opened the file in notepad. any ideas?
cheers
Are you using Windows Vista or Windows 7? If so then you probably have the game in the Program Files folder. Just move the game folder to something else like C:\Games\ and that should fix it. If it's outside of Program Files or you have WinXP then right-click the conf.ini and make sure it's not set to read only.
