While cruising e-Bay at work out of sheer boredom I ran across some interesting relics from the cold war. One item that caught my eye was this US Civil Defense issued dosimeter charger and dosimeter pens. These were to be kept in all Civil Defense fallout shelters for use in the event of nuclear war. One would charge and calibrate the dosimeter pens and then clip them to his or her clothing. The charged pen would then give a reading of how many rads the person absorbed while on the outside. I suppose heavier radioactive particles passing through the pen would remove the charge as they went through? There is a meter inside each dosimeter pen that can be read by holding it up to the light. The pen can also be touched to the charger and it will light up the inside of the dosimeter. Creepy stuff! I'm now trying to get a hold of the geiger counter kit that went with the charger. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies...very-happy.gif Might as well go all the way!
Here we have the Jordan Electronics radiological dosimeter charger model 750-S and three Bendix model CD V-742 dosimeters.

The unit is all metal with fiber plastic knobs with the Civil Defense emblem painted on.

Guts of the unit.

Testing lamps with spare.

Bendix dosimeter. These are all machined aluminum and powder coated yellow like the charging unit. Heavy duty stuff for sure.

I was able to get my camera to focus on the the reticle.

And here is one I purposely calibrated to show a rad count. Not a good day for the wearer if this reading was real!

Manual for the charger.

A sample from inside. Most of the manual goes on about repair of the unit in an emergency and finding spare parts while dodging raiders and super mutants. Boring stuff like that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies...miley-wink.gif

If you are interested this guy has a museum on US Civil Defense and the itmes used. Be sure to check out the fallout shelter section. I live in Dallas and never knew these existed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies...-surprised.gif Think I'll cruise down to the Science Place at Fair Park and see if I can get some photos in there. It's closed to the public but I want to give it a shot anyway. I've got to see that four ton blast door!
