Battery efficiency needs to triple before I buy one. I'd get one after uni if they could do 300 miles on one charge and cost about 8k new.
And you, sir, are dreaming! I can't see those things under $15K new, even with a 100 mile range.Quote:

8K sterling.
It will eventually happen.
The other problem with electric/hybrid cars is what to do with all the time-X'ed batteries. I don't think they are easily recyclable and may just end up in a landfill leaching toxic chemicals into the ground.
They really just need to make an electric car that looks less ugly.
How often in our day-to-day lives do we drive more than 100 miles? 50? 30? If you need to go farther for the weekend, rent another car.
The batteries don't have end up in a land-fill if proper management/regulation is set up to handle battery disposal.
Anyway, isn't China trying to start-up some car companies that will go electric? Should be interesting...
Oh I hope not, otherwise people will vaporize alive in their cars when the battery leaks on the third day.
I agree that electric cars should firstly stop looking like s...
I also think that they should allow at least 400km on a single charge.
Another important thing is charging time. You can just load up a normal car with fuel and move on. While even half an hour charging time for an electric car is inconvenient. One hour is long. And in reality the charging time is what? I haven't research but I'll put my guess at, 6-8 hours? No thanks.
Speed wise, anything that can go 150km/h I'd be happy with.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for less polluting car technologies, I just think that electric cars, as of now, are not good at anything but hopping around town.
And how often do you use your car for cross-country road trips? 90% of drivers simply hop around town as you say, so why the need for a 400 kilometer range? Is your job/school/grocery store/movie theater that far away?
6-8 hours for a charge may seem like a while, but you can charge it at home, and I don't know about you, but I tend to sleep for 6-8 hours a day, and during that time I'm not really driving so...
I guess we could just wait for a car to come around that can go at least 400 km on one charge, but if no one buys electric cars, then who's going to keep putting in the time and money to create a car that does? Better just release another gas-guzzler that people actually WILL buy.
True, most families have two or more cars. One tends to be a panzer and the other something more sensible. This 'Leaf' thing is the sensible side of the pair. True, it's not something for the drive to Baghdad, but it might just get you into town and back. Besides, with an electric motor imagine the torque.
that's just it, I may not go around on cross country trips often on average, but then again, I do it many times every summer, and now I'm driving with friends from one place to another, or driving to a music festival in the neighboring country, or to a friend's summer house 300km away, and the battery runs out. Oh no problem I'll just recharge it at the charging station here and continue on, after 6-8 hours.Quote:

To me electric cars are good as a substitute for small city cars like Smart and whatnot. They are not a good "overall" car. And I don't know about you but when I buy a car, I want to be able to travel long distances in it in a timely manner, which I can do even with the bottom end of small gas/diesel cars like the likes of a Daewoo Matiz or Renault Twingo if need be (comfort and storage space are another thing).
I don't care for buying or supporting a car that I can use for only city driving, while for going anywhere for the summer or winter, or visiting relatives or whatever, I can only say "damn', my car's not for that".
